what's the benefit??
hey, how do i know if my car has had a high cam mod or not?? haha

most OBD1 ecus are more versatile than OBD0 and OBD2, you can modify easyer and better than O and 2.
what do you mean by high cam mod ????

well my bro bought the 88 crx si and the last owner claimed that the engine had a high cam installed.. just wondering if he is just bullshitting or not...

ECU-MAN is that the only difference? just the ease of tuning?

I've found this from my research aswell. There seems to be alot more grassroots support for the OBD1 (in the case of Civics) then OBD0 and 2.
I believe this stems from the fact that the OBD0 ecus utilised an EPROM and not an EEPROM. The EPROM is obvilously alot harder for an enthusiast to erase. Most of the time an EEPROM is retro-fitted. Confirm / Deny?
Note that only the EK Civics post 1996 and latter models were fitted with OBD2 ECUs, and that even then, AUSDM may not have been fitted with one, since OBD2 is only mandated by US legislation.
Of course, I've never had any experience with a AUSDM EK, so they could have been fitted with an OBD2 ECU. Confirm / Deny?
OBD2 is nice generic diagnostic tool (provided the manufactures ECU supports all of the OBD2 fucntions; Only the EPA related stuff was mandated by US legislation), but is total arse for things like data logging. There are a few tools available for OBD0 and 1 ECUS which are much better.

you can make OBD0 runn with EEPROM and Flash RAM, OBD2-a is ROM in the MCU, no external EPROM,
there are benifets of stock ecu's from OBD0 throught to OBD2 like self learn feature, better trimming of AFR and such, but for the enthousiest OBD1 is the favorate for ease of modification.
What about legality of swapping between obd's?
Like, to what degree is the "same year or newer" enforced or is it just a bullshit US myth? Ways around it?
Would one planning to do a swap be best to swap from obd2 to obd1? Or does the wiring complication far outweigh the tuning advantages?
Take it away ecu man :D. Or whoever.

haha,
I have no idea with legality, all I know is you must pass smog test, ( immisions )
wire as a OBD2 if you want and use a convertion harness so you can go both ways.

Perfectly legal, aslong as you comply with all aspects. For example emissions, but a modified standard ECU coudl put you on the wrong side of the law in this regard anyway.

Same year or newer is relevant for engines. As to what defines an engine, it is generally considered to be the block, and relevant emissions gear.
OBD2 is required on post 1996 cars in America by legislation. It's for standardising emissions tests. Any further functionality set out in the SAE standards is not required. Most manufacturers don't implement those functiosn. They'd rather sell you one of their own diagnositcs tools.
Consequently, not all AUSDM cars implement OBD2, only their USDM variants.

Personally, I'd be looking at an aftermarket ECU. There is more support for modifying the OBD1 ECUS, but I dont feel that it is worth the trouble.

Could you please explain this further?
OBD1 and OBD2 are completely different protocols.

yes, I have a OBD2 del sol, I have left the factory loom alone, I run a OBDI ecu with a convertoin harnes, this harness plugs in to the OBDI ecu with the OBD1 connectors, and my OBD2 cars wiring loom plugs into this harness thus making my car OBD1 with OBD2 loom and engine

Ah that makes sense. Thanks for the clarrification. :)
