Hey guys,

Been searching for sum new tyres in 205/45/R16... high performance street of course ;) Yes, i've pretty much read thru the whole tyre thread already, but it's just gone too damn messy.

Anyway, these are the tyres i've shortlisted for now... but just wanted to c who's tried what, how much ya paid for them, and any other useful info would be great.

1. Bridgestone GIIIs (quoted $205 each)
http://www.bridgestone.com.au/tyres/products/car/tyre_pics/gridiii.jpg

2. Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval (quoted $180 each)
http://www.bridgestone.com.au/tyres/products/car/tyre_pics/Firestone-Wide-Oval.jpg

3. Yokohama AVS ES100
http://www.yokohama.com.au/dbimage.asp?type=tyre&ImageID=25&Height=240&Width=180&JPegQuality=55&NoImage=%2FIMAGES%2FNoImage%2Ftyre%2Ejpg

4. Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3
http://www.goodyear.com.au/sptimages/fs_eagle_f1_gs-d3.jpg

5. Goodyear Revspec RS-02 (no size)
6. Dunlop SP Sport FM901 (discontinued!)

Would love to see sum prices... might determine wot i'd get in the end ;) And yes i've got a budget, and i don't want semi slicks or any imported tyres... unless u got a cheap second hand set for me :D

I'm interested in this too as I'm soon to buy 16" wheels. I don't mean to jack your thread mate, but any info on Toyo tyres would be good too.

I've experienced the Yokies ES100s (205/40/17) prior on my old CRX & she went well both in the dry & wet...a softer compound tyre will shorten its length with regards to the life duration of the tyre but this is compensated with optimum grip...my next rubber purchase will be the Toyo T1Rs (215/35/18) on my boosted CRX so hopefully they hold traction as best as it can with the punishment I fork out on them...

I have a set of ADVAN AD07 on 15inch and AVS on 16inch (for street)....i must say..the ADVAN has much harder sidewall compared to AVS...but the AVS doesnt handle too bad either...i think u cant go wrong with yokohamas. The dunlop FM901 are old i think they are supeceded by the LM series.

I've tried:

ZE-502 - Useless in both wet and dry
Eagle F1 GS-d2 - Okay in the wet, useless in the dry
A539 - Great in the dry, so so in the wet. Good feel.
ES100 - Good in the wet, average in the dry. Not up to the A539 imo.
GS-D3 - Excellent in the wet. Reasonable in the dry. Lousy feel from soft sidewalls. Pretty good for 60' times.

yeah FM901 no longer produced. great tyre though.
the were superceded by Direzza not LM series.
the DZ101 which replaced it is meant to be very good. they also have stiffer sidewalls which is the main negative with the FM901

i got toyo trampio in same size for 143 a piece
good value and also sidewall sticks out a lil bit so protects ur rims. saved one of my gramlights when gf went too close to the kerb! phew!!!

What do you think of Yokohama C.Drives? Was quoted $205 for 205/55 R16.

Yup, just visited Beaurepairs and was told FM901 has been discontinued - one down...
Goodyear Revspec doesn't come in the size i'm after, so they're out - two down :p.

They recommended Goodyear F1 ($220 each)... But duno i dun like the tread pattern  but still a possibility. The Direza looks like an awesome tyre, but damn it's $260 a corner! Didn't have much else, prob cos they specialise in Goodyear and Dunlop mainly.

I've just changed to Goodyear eagle F1 from Bob janes today
(was thinking about G3 or F1), they say both are very similar in quality, but the F1's are cheaper, G3 costs $130 per corner and don't have stock atm...

$118 per corner, feels good in dry, will test it and keep posting later

I pretty satisfy with the tread pattern tho

I'm assuming u got 15" at that price... but i'm after 16".

Hmm, haven't considered Toyos, but they look quite good... and Tony if i could get them at a similar price to u for the Trampios, sounds very tempting to me :D Anyone tried the Toyo Proxes T1-R?

And are the Yoko ES100 a softer compound tyre... ie shorter life?? If so i'll probly rule them out...

ya, mine one is 15"

for the toyo, seems a good choise too

for the trampio, it's around $100-$120 for 15", just for your reference

the T1-R would be a good choise if u have spare money

i've tried TPG's, and then have T1R's on the front now. Grip much better in wet and dry. Feels more planted. Definitely aquaplaning resistance is much better than TPG. (thank the many roundabouts that Sydney has ! )
Would love to see how they fare at Wakey Pk sometime....

Again it is the next level up from the TPG, so it's expected, at a much higher price.

My tyres are in 195/50/15 size, not 16". So the prices i have are irrelavent for you.
Aswell as different tyre garages have different prices.

For other readers references, i picked up the T1R (in the above size) for $180ea. You will most probably be able to pick them up for a better price, but that's what happens when you leave rego to the last day... :-( (either buy a cheaper set for the next 30k km's or spend a bit more & try them now for the next 30k kms)

The Toyo T1Rs are towards the pricey end of the equation no doubt...I've had prices ranging from $325-$375 (215/35/18) for each corner but from all reports thus far, they do the job & do it well...& I'm someone that places rubber as a high priority on my CRX so I'm in the midst of saving up for them currently...depends on your goals I guess & what order you place characteristics of noise, grip, longevity, price etc...btw, I've also heard some good things coming from the more attractively-priced Hankook Ventus K104s...check them out as well if you can...

thanks for the great advice guys

have been busy so still haven't had a chance to get more quotes... but seems the T1-R will be a lil too dear.

Hankook Ventus K104s - best cheap tyre
G3 - best street tyre IMO, good balance between grip, noise and wear

i was advise u to stay clear of good year eagle F1 gs-d3.....unless i wanted to buy them in i think, dont quote me, bigger then 17inches...this is because the smallers one i.e 16 and under are made in thailand...where as the bigger ones are made in germany...

im running c-drive supposedly better then a539 in all departments (c-dirves replaced a539s) i think they handle pretty good and are very quiet...i dont think many tyres handle well in the wet even if one is better then the other its i still wouldnt push it....

from my experience when i was shopping around for tyres my results were
(yoko)es100=or>(yoko)c-drive>(bfg) profiler g>(bridgestone)gIII>(firestone)firehawk>(good year)f1 gs-d3>
as for other brand i wouldnt know as i didnt look at them....

like someone said though cant go wrong with yokos

How about 2x pairs of pirelli's mate ;)

Despite what other memebrs have said i am not a big fan of the T1-R, just not a great wet weather tyre in the dry it is no different to a G3 or Dunlop in the same category.

In any case, you would be safe with any of the above name tyres as they are all hearty and good for at least 40K of hard driving.

I went from ZE-502 (useless) to a set of C-drives in 195/55/15
it was great, pity I've sold the car now but when the time comes to get new tyres for the R I'd deffiantely be putting c-drives back on, and from wat I can remember they're not all that expensive either

I have Toyo Trampio's like top pic on previous page, came with car and am very happy with them. Good in dry and wet, nice looking sidewall too. Planning to try Yokohama AVS ES100 or A539's next.

I've got the K104's in the size you are after, i'm happy with them, wet they don't feel too bad, and dry they are fine, I use them for autokhana's and stuff and they handle direction changes fast and very little understeer.

i got eagle f1-gs-d3 in 17" for my euro (225/45) and they are ok. I'll probably be trying something different next time around - it might just be me but tramlining seems a real problem with these treads and although grip is good probably not as much as i thought.

I'm going to try Dunlop SP Sport 3000A on my Euro's 16" and also Yoko C.Drive on the Astra's 15"

I am also in the market to buy new tyres since my stock tyres on dc5 type s doesnt have enough traction to prevent wheel hops when changing to gear 2. I read alot of good comments on toyo T1-R and the price is $326 per tyre on 17". The guy recommend F1-GS-D3 and said it offeres same perfomance as the T1-R but for $100 cheaper so it got my attention. But after reading this thread, i think im sticking to T1-R for the safe side. I also heard about Kumho Ku15 are as good as T1-R and abit more expensive also but not sure about that yet, havent got a quot yet. Anyone know much about kumho ku15?
