I've got a 1999 Civic D series and it has 100k's on it. It has always been serviced @ a Honda dealer so I guess it has always been using OEM 10w30. I was so curious to find out how well Synthetic Oil will run in my engine, so I changed my Oil to Castrol Formula R 5w30.
I've been using Synthetic for over 2 weeks now and up till now, it's been running a OK. Gear change has been Drastically improved, and the overall rev is smoother. But I kinda realised that it's been using more Petrol than it's suppose to. For example, usually I pour Full tank of PULP and will last for over 380k's Easy. But now I can't even reach 320k. Do you think it's got something to do with my Oil??? Or is it time to change my Spark Plug and/or Fuel Filter??? Need Advise!!!

maybee your sticking it more causing it to drink more,

you could change plugs and air cleaner, also posibly fuel filter.

320-380 ks to a tank!!!

Dude - I'm getting 420-480kms on 98 RON PULP around town. Driving hard. Same engine - 1996 D16y4, done almost 180,000ks. Maybe you should get it looked at - I don't think oil has THAT big an effect on fuel economy, and if anything synthetic should give BETTER fuel consumption.

Yeah that's what I thought about 'Synthetic' as well. And in terms of 380kms, I dun usually let it run down to 'Fuel light' stage, normally I refuel at the 1/4 full mark.

The other day I checked out the Air filter and it was atrociously dirty! I'll replace it with K&N within this week. But does Air Filter really make a huge difference in terms of Fuel efficiency???

if you choke your self can you breath ???

same with your car. blocked air filter is chocking your engine, thus making it get less air, more fuel, so it run rich. so then the ECU compensates. at the end of the day you get crap economy

^^^^ I guess so!!!
Another Questions..... Is my little D16y4 engine is capable of running a Fully Synthetic Oil like the one I'm using right now? It's running pretty good now but just wanna make sure everythings' aOK!

I don't see why not. Mine's due for an oil change soon and I'll be using Mobil 1 this time around. I'm currently using Castrol Magnatec - not overly impressed - the oem FEO oil is better IMO, but I want to see how she goes with Mobil 1.

But Seriously DomenEK, 480km's in one Full Tank? That's puching it a bit right? You must be at the edge of completely emptying your tank.

Oh btw, I just got quoted for a K&N Air Filter for my car (not POD or anything), the guy told me it'll be $110!!! WTF MAN???!!!??? More than a hundred for a freakin Air filter? You can't be serious right? How much are OEM air Filters btw? I'm guessing it'll not be as much as K&N.

mate a KnN filter is usable until ur car dies, is re-washable, proven and hi-flow

ur factory filters are made of paper of course they'll be 20 bucks

dont use pot air filter!.......as for your car a drop in air filter + stock airbox is good enough!

480ks around town if I drive nice(ish), probably push past 500 if I drive like a granny. That's with the fuel light on for a while, but I've yet to run out of fuel. I usually get about 550-600ks on the highway, and even then the fuel light has only been on for a little while.

So does that mean even if I did install a AEM CAI, it'll do jackshit in terms of Performance? Not even a single horsepower gain???

i get about 250kms half tank....around town on my crappy oldhonda civic Si - only becasue it can breathe :) No clogged air/fuel filters and always with fresh plugs etc etc.
Also I have the stock airbox + a hi-flow air filter.

Nope...On a D16Y1, I regularly got over 500km per full tank, and that includes mad Vtec thrashing around. It was a completely stock engine with 200,000km on the clock.

Hey Ben, How often do you change your Fuel Filter AND Plugs? Cos I think I have to start go "econ" on my Car, Fuel's just too damn expensive nowadays!!!

Well why don't you put the car back to the same oil and see if the fuel consumption is any better. Synthic oils are meant to reduce friction and increase milage. I don't think this would cause you to use more fuel. Unless you are ripping every time you take off.
I know if i keep my engaged in Vtec all the time it certainly drinks fuel. On the hwy i got 600km on a tank, generally get about 450 - 500km per tank in my ek4
