Just bought a 2nd hand Civic VTI.

It came with a exhaust and pod filter. I changed the exhaust and took of the pod filter cos is was sucking in hot air. I now have the stock one back on.

I am getting about 300km off a tank. I reset the ECU but it hasn't done much.

Anyone got any ideas on how to fix the problem??

Thanks

manual/auto? could be quite a few things. drive like a granny, needs a service, old/clogged fuel filter, old/fouled spark plugs, injectors, even incorrect tyre pressure can play a small role in crappy fuel consumption.

how would incorrect tyre pressure affect fuel consumption??

the more air u have, the more fuel efficient it is apparently
not too sure how myself but i remember reading it somwhere
it plays a very minimal role but a role nonethelesss

cool..if someone else could provide a better description of this..i've never heard of this before..interesting...

More air in tyre = larger circumference,

Larger circumference = longer distance travelled per revolution of tyre.

So for each rev you are travelling further. Simple.

Stiffer from more air in the tyres , the less rolling resistance. Using less petrol to propell the car the same speed

how would incorrect tyre pressure affect fuel consumption??

a flatter tyre will have more contact surface area with the ground as opposed to a properly inflated tyre, so there's more rolling resistance, hence engine has to work harder

my car (EK1 sedan) has recently been eating more petrol, about 400km a tank (once was 550), i'm also at a loss to know whats wrong too, i've changed all the filters, pumped my tyres, gonna try changing sparkies 2moro too... hope that does the trick

friend suggested doing the CEL check, i didnt get anything out of it, but maybe you'll find your prob there?

It is manual. I have to take it in for its 100000km service soon.
Hopefully they will sort it out.

My tyre pressure is fine

thanks

I get 450kms a tank usually
best I can do is 500km
thats with a CAI, exhaust and med level driving eg rev the car once in a while when I am in a hurry.

try to check the distributor setting...then check what injector it's using...and also..check how big is your fuel tank..hehe..

??? i had the feeling my car was using more fuel as welllately. what people are saying on this thread about tyre pressure and fuel consumption could be the answer for ME cause my front right tyre loses air everyday and its not punctured. im sick of it just gonna get 2 new tyres cause my car used to get alot more k's before this problem started. i think its not so much the circumference but the fact that the engine is working harder to push, cause i was driving on 15psi once and my engine was knocking, like there was sand rattling in my engine.

i say again. less air in tyres = more rolling resistance.
Check the valve stem on the tyre that loses air - it might be leaky/faulty.

Anyway , check out your o2 sensor , cat might be blocked ? Air filter might be dirty too ?

our tyres when under inflated curve up in the middle
http://www.ctyre.com.au/images/hot_tyre.gif
so contact isnt larger, u loose energy from heating the sidwalls (which now bear all the weight) thus more rolling resistance.

overinflation will cause less fuel loss as there is less deformation in the tyre, thus less loss in energy, thus less rolling resistance.

Try changing your plugs, if you use incorrect plugs or if they are fouled up it will take more petrol. Check your timing also. And use a lower viscosity oil helps 10-30w or something along those lines.

ditto ben!!! 2 of my valve stems were faulty and today i had to get 4 new tyres cause its wasnt worth taking the tyres out to change the valve stems and my tyres didnt have much tread on them anyways so i just got 4 new nankang ns2s and they changed all the valve stems too.
good advice dude  i'll buy u a air freshner when im rich :p

I'll second the O2 Sensor and the Air Filter.

My car has lost a fair bit of fuel consumption over the last 6 months (when it was on the road) - from 7.2l/100kms to 7.8l/100kms - doesnt' seem much but it made the car do just over 350kms while before i was getting 450/500.

Replace O2 sensor and Airfilter :)

300km? thats horrible..dont know if its been mentioned, but how many L's does it hold?

try to get it serviced.. my 2c

My Si does about 450 in city driving so the Vti should be doing a bit more (8.5-8.8L/100kms to be exact).

Tank is 42L I believe.

it seem happend to me in these 2 months. full tank only can last for 350km. will try to change spark plug...but why need to check o2 sensor?
is that the one located on intake?
how much around the get the new 02 sensor replace?
I was thinking about the CAT as well...coz my rear bumper getter black ( look like burned) near the muffler...how to clean it ..or need to be replace?

Its a 45L tank.

I was told it could be the O2 sensor

How much are you looking at for a new o2 sensor??

How much are you looking at for a new o2 sensor??

from a wrecker probably about $300 +
New probably $500 + knowing Honda...

O2 Sensor is in your Exhaust manifold - either at the front or underneath the car - but on the exhaust.

how do i check the timing?

Limbo

with a timing gun i'm sure it has instructions with it.
The o2 sensor goto an exhaust shop i'm sure they can hook you up with something. O2 sensor helps by adjusting the richness in the fuel when cruising.

I heard changing PCV Valve does wonders in terms of Fuel Efficiency. There's a DIY on this somewhere....Search is your best friend!!!
