View Full Version : 4-1 headers, ground clearance?

I've read that 4-1 headers have ground clearance problems on lowered cars, just wondering if anybody has had experience with this on a dc2?
If so, how bad is it?.. my car is fairly low, and the current headers (stock) are already dented so im looking to replace them, not going to go for a 4-2-1 though.
cheers.

why you want 4-1?
just curious as to why you choose top end over midrange??

why would i need low / mid range?.. when flooring it, im always going to be in the top end.

4-1 are really only for the track where you hardly drop from 5,000. Your range from 1500-4000 is going to suck. Thats why i changed back to 4-2-1.

whenever im in the low - mid, im granny driving anyway.. i dont mind if i lose some torque in that range. and face it, its not like honda engines make any down low anyway!
like i said, when you need power, you're going to be in the top end (unless u dont know how to drive).. why did the jdm itr come with 4-1 headers stock?

Mate you have no idea.
Do you not realise that you need to pass through your mid range to get to your high end.

i got 4-1 headers on my civic, big mistake, they sit too low and my midrange suffered....hence i am now buying 4-2-1, if ur stock headers are dented then say bye bye to aftermarket 4-1's, ive had mine for about 6 months and they are now cracked...even though i drive very carefully over speedhumps and driveways
btw my car is pretty low

eventhough the car is low, having 4-1 will still give you porblems with ground clearance which will always have the headers sitting lower than your oil sump.
your cars ride hieght makes it that little bit difficult:D:D
but i like... i like alot:D:D

unfortunately I deleted a lot of pics off my server, including my JDM 4-1 ground clearance pic...
however... I can tell you this... the JDM 4-1 in my typeR sits fine, the plastics are still lower then the piping and I have had no problems at all with clearace.
and as far as this 4-2-1 vs 4-1 talk, I dont know what you are comparing, but I can personally compare the AUSDM DC2R 4-2-1 and JDM DC2R 4-1 and I noticed NO power loss in low-rpm, I have BETTER response in mid-rpm, and anything in Vtec/high-rpm is EXTREMELY better.

aus itr 4-2-1s are realy small diameter pipes but any after market header will make you notice a difference, i noticed a big jump when i put itr(aus) in my gsi, from the ugly cast iron manifold it came with. but any descent set of 4-2-1 will make a diff as opessed to itr 4-2-1,
and a vehicle with greater bottom end torque will always take out a vehicle that has to wait to high revs for Horse power,
its a fact!!

I'm just getting my 4-1 headers made currently just got back from there they are pushed up as high as they can but still will be lowest point of the car
what I will be making is a skid plate coming of from the front corss member
this protect and cover the front of the headers incase of hitting sumthing
On an ls i think they would sit lower anyways but my car is lowerd 3 inches and i'm going to go lower so i will need this!
