Is it beter to buy it before other mods (cam gears, exhaust ec) or after all the mods so you can tune it all in one go? I tried to search but cant find a straight foward answer????

Yes do all your mods first then tune.

there's a post somewhere here from Dyno Dave that said if he modded his own car.. he would start off with an ECU so after each bolt on mod you get, you can retune your ECU again so it will create maximum power/efficiency.

Tuning is expensive though. If I owned a Dyno I'd prob go Dyno Dave's way.

haha too true

for those without a dyno and who cant tune the more practical way would be to get the ECU, get the mods then tune for the mods at once. Retune when you make significant changes

Perhaps a stupi question, but would buying hondata for a bone stock dc2r make any improvements? Or your only going to notice a diff if it is used in conjunction/tuned with other mods?

It is nice to see that some of you are reading what I have posted .Yes some people do charge alot for dyno time,to tune a Hondata can take from 2-3 hrs and we charge $110 per hr. As I said in the other post I would do the ECU first and yes you will get some gains in the way the car drives just read how happy Ginganggooly is with his car now he is a prime example of what a Hondata can do for you as the only other mods he has done to his car is headers and an exhaust.
Regards Dyno Dave
Ok 1 more thing I have learnt to tune STD cars thru production racing here in Australia where you are not allowed to do any mods to the engine or driveline but you are allowed to change the ECU and exhausts and we have done a 300kw SS Commordore and it now makes 280KW at the wheels and it that only made 220kw in STD form.

I'm another of the ones taking the low road. PLan is for the Hondata to be installed and tuned at the same time as the headers are slapped on. I don't have a catback, CAI or any of that... just have some headers. Depending on when the Hondata arives, might be ready in a week or so....

DynoDave, got a few questions.

1) can u get those sort of gains in a highly tuned from the factory na 4, as a poorly tuned commodore?

2) can u get these sort of gains with any standalone, and not just hondata? I assume that the gains are from timing and a/f mixes, which can be changed not just with hondata correct?

thanks

I got a few questions too DynoDave.

3) What ecu/chip did you use for the SS Commodore?
4) How did you get so much power from an exhaust & ecu upgrade? Surely there had to be other mods.
5) What was the most power you tuned on a stock Honda Vtec FI using Hondata?

The Commodore was using a HSV race ECU that is supplied to owner thru Holden Motorsport. We fitted a M800 Motec because there are not many stand alone ECU's that can run 8 coils. And the exhaust was done by a Penrith exhaust shop so nothing special. So no other mods but we did find a fuel pump problem when we got it running with the Motec so we replaced it and then spent the next 8hrs tuning to get the results.
And the Hondata question I have only just got all of my dealer package on the weekend so I can not comment on that this week but give me a few more weeks and I will be able to answer that for you.

You can make good gains tuning a N/A 4cyl engine but it takes a long time to do it and you normally have to move the cam timing to get the best result.
You can get good gains with any high end market ECU (ie Motec Autronic )
but in all my years of tuning standalone ECU's I have never seen one control injectors like Hondata does. The AFR that we got on one of the cars we tuned on Sunday was the flatest I have ever seen.Just give me some more time and I will do more research with the graphs we have in the dyno.
