all i know is to let the cat move a bit freely side to side and it's good to have one.

correct me if i am wrong, but its to stop the whole exhaust system from moving, the headers are attached to the engine, which moves, esp when revved. so the flexi-pipe prevents the whole exhaust from moving which would happen if it was all solid.

well when i said move i didn't mean in a big movement. Say if u got the flexi pipe it will put less strain on the header. don't quote me on this

So the exhaust system has separate movement compared to the engine. Without the flex-pipe, under stress there would be no 'give' in the exhaust system to flex seperately from the engine so the exhaust would be more prone to cracking, especially at the dump pipe/manifold/headers.

we are all basically saying the same thing lol...

Flexi pipe is very important in east-west configuration engines, because of the torque-twist in the engine, this can: Snap bolts and crack pipes!

If your only installing a cat-back system they are not necessary as the honda cat is setup with spring loaded bolts to compensate for the twisting!! ;)

Befor i got my flexy pipe i broke the mounts off my exhaust and snaped one m,andrel bend
then i got a flexy and then that flexy even broke coz of too much launching and stuff finally i got a heavy duty dubble braded flexy and no probs to date

its not like connected to the headers or anything, there is a short pipe first then the flexi-pipe, then another pipe, then the cat...

They are about $120 I believe supplied and fitted.
I had 1 on my lancer when the extractors and system went on.

the pure reason has been stated but also its for noise as well

everytime ur engine moves ur exhaust would move but at the flange it would scrape and make a squeeky noise.and if that pisses u off u would just get it changed.but yeah in having a flexi join it wont cause ur exhaust to move as EVERYONE has said...

another alternative would be to use the donut that u can purchase from honda, alot of ppl i know use this instead of the flex pipe, the donut goes in the flange with the spring loaded bolts providing enough flex to the exhaust system when it does move.
It is the same as the stock system they use with ur car except, if u have a 2.5" collector on ur header u will need to purchase the s2k donut from honda as it is a larger size donut.

can ourchase form one of the traders we already have on the forums too!
