Yeah I putted out the plastic mounts in the front door and the holes left were just about right for the 6" to fit right in :D
If ya do that make sure you put a few washers between the door and speaker coze you'll scratch ya windows when they go up and down
do it then test it

i replaced my front n rear speakers in my EG..
front. ive got 6".. just take out the 4" bracket.. u dont need it!!
the rears.. i was able to put a 6".. from memory.. it was either 6".. or 6.5"
.. u can go to a sound system specialist.. such as Desire for sound. n they would probabli be able to tell u the biggest speakers u can put, as they do it every day..
O yeh. ive got a VTI.. SOo my rear arm rests came with brackets

i dunno if this helps or not but i have a similar setup in my old sk00l accord. To fit my 6x9's into the side panels where the pockets where i had to make a custom mount using mdf and then had to cut the viynl trim in order to make it look snug, i still need to finish the edges off with some black lining tho.

My '95 EG VTI has had 6.5" splits in the rear. I doubt you'd fit (or want) 6x9 in there... you'd also blow your rear passengers away, 'cos the speakers are basically right next to them. My 6.5"s do the job easy.

what are splits? sorry for noob question but I'm not in to audo stuff

I had measure it out. The stock mounting thing will not have enough depth in it to fit 6*9. So i gess have to do what Usual Suspect said. Space is premium in a hatch!

i have mate, i fitted 5 1/4 inch splits in mine not hard at all... just cut the hole and bolted them in then cliped the plastic thing back in, its easy cos you can take it out to cut the hole

Splits are speakers with both a larger speaker and a smaller speaker in the one assembly. So you get great bass and treble response.
