stupid idle.. help a friend!!!

Guys,
a friend's da9 teg LS is playing up it's idle. the idle is very rough and it just keeps going between 2000rpm to 1000rpm... uppp... then downnn.... upppp thennn downnn.... it's very annoying. What can cause this? the engine is stock cept for a SRI. Once he drained the wrong oil and caused the engine to suffocate on like 10L of oil, cos he didnt drain the engine oil. This fouled up the plugs, but thats replaced.. so don't kknow what can be causing it. Any ideas?

my mates evo used to do that, but rev slow,fast,slow,fast all in quick succession... It was an o2 sensor or something stupid

sound like the O2 sensors!!! very common on WRX's

my car used to do this
its easy
the car is hunting trying to find the right idel point
there is a little screw above the throttle body play around with that this will adjust your idel level
scrwing out lifts idle screwing in lowers idle
problem solved!
also it want hurt to clean out the throttlebody with some throttle body cleaner as well
and dont loose the screw

My car did this got the carby flushed and the mechanic said it was caused from driving small distances something like a carbon build up or something!

yeah, i too was leaning on the o2 sensor being totally screwed.

skremn, we've tried playing with that screw. doesn't solve the problem. Since it's running between 1000rpm - 2000 rpm, if we lower the idle, it'll cut the engine, cos it'll run say between 200 - 1200 rpm.

jord, carbon clean is expensive. hehehe... he's cheap.

could be your tps switch.
on your throttle body maybe?
i had the exact problem, and it was the tps (throttle position switch)

have a look at the idling control valve.
a friend of mine had the same problem and once it was replaced... problem gone.
cost... $180

might be even leaking vacuum, check the brake booster, could b that. mine was a rubber ring that cost $28 to replace. problem solved

hermm.. dont know if this helps, but we went and tried and unhooked the TPS. and the car still runs, it runs better actually. but we didnt drive on it. A friend said that if u unhooked the TPS, the motor should die out after u rev it. But this one didnt... any thoughtS?

nah when i un hooked mine, it didn't die, it just stabilized the idle, instead of it fluctuating.
but it stayed at a high idle, for a quick fix, i bought a second hand throttle body, and it's been working fine for, 8 months.

its the fast idle thermo valve (FITV).. search for this on the forum or honda-tech.com to find out how to fix it

happened to me twice already.. just take off the cover (its behind the TB) and screw the white plastic bit back in.

oh... so it's that? not the TPS, not the O2 sensor, not leaking vacuum, bla bla bla???... I'll have a look and see whats the deal with this FITV... thanks
