Hi guys, abit of a noob question here. i have an alpine amp and running all 4 channels for front and rear speakers. its currentlyy running at 4volt on all 4 channel, but when i decrease the volt to .35, .3, .25 the lower the louder it sounds. what does voltage mean and is it the higher the better?

the gain on the amp is there to GAIN MATCH to the deck, what model deck you got?

eg: if your deck is 4v then you need to set the amp to 4v which will normally be located to the left of the dial.

or if your using hi-level inputs like your speaker outs from the deck then you need to gain the dial to the right to match the output voltage from the speaker out on the deck.

its there as I said to gain match NOT you be used a a volume control, the only volume control you should be using is the volume knob on the deck. if you can dial the deck all the way WITHOUT distortion then your doing it right, you can then gain the amp gain a little more if you wish. its all about headroom and to stay away from distortion or clipping the amp too soon...

the gain is there to compensate for low voltage signal from deck RCA.

if your deck RCA output is 0.5v, then you turn the gains UP to 0.5 (or anywhere higher) to compensate for the low signal strength.

HOPE THAT HELPS !

My amp is alpine mrv-545 125rms per channel. My deck is Pioneer DEH-P9650MP
http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/car_entertainment/cdtuners/dehp9650mp/index.html
the higest i can turn the volt up is 0.4... on my amp when i was playing around with it, it wont let me go higher than .4 but it lets me decrease it to .35, .25 and etc... and it gets louder as i go on.

What does distortion mean exactly, can u describe the definition of distortion

thanks for the info guys

silly me, it works withou the au. the site is really helpful thanks.
There's alot to read and i still dont understand all, can someone clear this up please.

My amp only allow me to set from 0.2, 1.5. 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 volt. I can set channel 1/2 and 3/4 channel seperately. Its at 4.0 volt on all 4 channels. when I decrease it to 3.0 it gets louder and louder at 2.0 and the lower the louder, i dont understand why is that. My spec on my head unit said premax output is 6.5 volt. Is the lower volt pre output the better?

you use it to balance and tune the system
read my previous post man

just because you can put it loud, doesnt always mean loud is best.
