Hi Guys
i changed my oil yesterday and out in 20w - 50 i went to ta honda dealer and the guy told me that it should be 10w 30 i was wondering if leaving the 20w - 50 would do any damage or should i just change the oil and put in the 10w 30??

My guess is you will have to warm car up more because the oil is thick??
Somebody else can prob qualify this...

i dont think it will do any damage to the car. but youshould use the recomended oil because thats why its been recomended....
you should prolly change it and use the correct type of oil.
thats my 2cents:D
20W50 is a thick oil...normally for older cars
it won't matter too much...but if you wanted to use somethign that isn't 10W30 you should use something that covers more than what's needed....eg 5w40 or something like that

I use to use 10w 30 oil for my vtec integra but it use to go through oil as much as petrol (I use Vtec pretty often).
Changed it to 20w50 and uses much less oil than before and has not greatly changed performance of car. U can feel a small difference of course, as the engine is not ass free as with 10w 30, but difference is minimal and is worth it when u look at costs involved in putting new oil in all the time!!
My mate has been using 20w50 on his 89 prelude for the past 5 years and he drives his car harder then anybody else i know on a regular basis, and his car has had no problems caused by using this oil (and his car is suppose to use 10w30 aswell).
Its a matter of if u wanna spend the money on topping up ur oil all the time or not......10w30 is better but needs constant filling up as it dissapears, but 20w30 lasts longer and does not damage engine in anyway, and performance is only slightly reduced.

i would change it back to 10w30....honda recommended it for a reason.....

Honda recommends that oil cause it provides the best performance for the engine, not because other oil will cause damage to engine.
As a performance engine, 10w30 will allow u to basically start the car and go crazy straight away (although i'd always let my car warm up first), whereas 20w50 u need to let car heat up a bit before booting it.
10w30 is better, as it allows engine to rev more freely amongst other things, but does not mean 20w50 will damage engine.

depends on how many kms the engines done
thicker oil is heavier it is
considering taxies are on roads 24\7 they use maxed 15W reccommended

Heard alot of people using Mobile 1 and they are happy with it too

20w-50 will simply offer more protection for the engine but will reduce performance a little.. (not much)..
just change it back to 10w-30 at the next change.. u dont need to do it right now imo.
btw u should be changing it every 5000km (cos oil is cheap)

... Yeah. But I wouldn't thrash it much. That oil won't flow aswell or as fast. So it's not really doing the same job.... I'd change it out now.
Trojan - You've got problems. Perform (or get) a Leak-Down Test or at least a compression test, done.
I was using Mobil1 0w-40, from 10,000 to 100,000. Then moved to Mobil1 10w-30 tri-synth, as I was starting to use abit of oil between 10K services. I ran Dino oil (Changes every 5K) for the first 10,000 then move to Synth. At 110,000 I added the Nulon E40 teflon treatment. I use about 100-150 Mls between 10,000k service periods, unless i'm at the track...then it'll use about that much in a day.
Just my 2c worth....Goodluck.

Hey do you have to change the oil every 5,000k? I thought it was a bit more than that.

if oils are too thick and can not be pump around you engine then it will make more damange then protect. You will also lose oil pressure in some cases.
If you can't get your engine to run at the oil viscosity temperature it will not perform or protect as what the oil suppose to do.
20w-50 I would only use in extreme circumstance like racing, very worn, engine has like 200,000kms+ etc.
Honda 10w-30 FEO oils are Eco oils and comply with low emission and general use. Unfortunally we are at the bottom of the world and don't get all the options from Honda.
However, Honda actually also have the following oils:
10w-30 (General)
0w-20 (ULEV, Hybrid and cold weather)
5w-30w (General performance)
5w-40(most expensive 100% Synthetic for Type R, S2k and NSX)
There are heaps of products off the shelves like
Mobil 1 Ow-40, Shell Ultra 5w-40, Castrol Formula R Ow-40w etc etc
Go for Synetheic or SemiSynetheic oil as they have greater resistance to oil oxidation (thickening)
This topics has been cover so many times.

in the instruction manual, there is a graph showing what oil is suitable for your car depending on the climate you live in. The range is pretty big for our sort of temperatures, i remember it being something like from 0-50 viscosities but dont take my word for it because i just buy 5W40 oil after i checked it was ok. I cant remember the exact page but it should be under 'servicing' or 'maintenance' in the cars instruction manual. I saw an exact copy of this bar graph in the haynes manual i have for my other car as well so i would just go to the manual.

Had a look at the owners manual just now. Your right in what u say. Manual has ranges of 5w30 to 20w50 depending on climate.
As an example, 10w30 which is the most common oil i think most ppl use on their integras, is for temperatures of -20degrees celcius to 35degrees celcius (Ambient temperature). This pretty much hits spot on with aussie weather.
But 20w50 is for -10degrees up to over 40degrees. This basically means u can use either oil.....it won't damage engine at all. It will however reduce performance fractionally, so i say if u wanna not have to top up ur oil every week cause u love the sound of V-tec, go for 20w50....
But if u got cash to throw around then go 10w30 for the added performance (that u will only minimally feel)

Oh and one last thing, with 20w50 oil, u gotta let ur engine warm up abit before you rev like a mad man........give the oil some time to warm up since its thicker and works better at higher temperatures.

im using penzoil 15W
gonna go back to motul on next change
oil SHOULD be changed at MOST 10 000kms latest
5000 is to keep it lasting longer and for fanatics!
i change it every 5000 cause i intend on keepin the car running for a long time to come

its ok to use that....shouldn't coz any problem...but like others said....let the engine warm up a bit before you floor it....in the service book will say change oil every 10000 but if you change every 5000 just give you a bit more protection and also depends on how you drive....if you drive like a gannie then 10000 is ok...but if you floor it everytime you better off change them more often.....just a little opinion.....hope that helps.....
