As you know i have a 86 civic, the 1.5L 12V SOHC Carb manual.
I changed the gearbox/diff oil a bit back, one mechanic looked up the oil grade, then i also found it in my waynes book and my owners manual, its 20W50, same as i use in the engine. Since i changed it, as yes i did it properly, when the engine is cold, in the morning, its a bit harder to change gears, only down-changing tho, going from 1-2 and 2-3 is easy, but 3-2 and 2-1 is hard when its frozen, it requires a little tiny bit of force, and it never use to be like that.

My question is, what grade oil should i be using? would a thinner one help more when its cold?

just use honda MTF, or if you have to honda FEO.

I'm about to post a similiar enquiry for my '79 Accord as what the owners manual says differs to what the oil manufacturers catalogues say - watch this space.

Apparantly I am using Honda MTF in my new rebuilt box.
When its cold i can feel it go into gear and it wont go in without reasonable force. However, when the car is warm it glides in with ease. Is this normal ? because its the second time i have had the box rebuilt and I have never encountered this before ..

Get from your honda dealership spare-parts dept.

for B-series you'll need 3 x 1L bottles which costs $35 at trade price.

I changed from MOTUL (less than 10,000kms) to HONDA MTF and had a noticable and pleasurable difference.. 'felt' like my gearbox was in heaven ;)

Ya mna use geniune honda mtf in my EG an dude it the best thing i have done for my gearbox. It feels smooth as an glides into gear. If u want use the nulon gear box treatment i felt my reverse gear did not clunk when i changed.

mate of mine used redline gearbox oil on his car
he said his gearbox felt 10x better!
the gear crunches at high revs went away!
