Hey guys i have been thinking about do a conversion into my ek1. just got a few questions and to see wat ppl would do.
Ok i wanna do one of these options, i have all the turbo gear already, just need a half cut and to make it stronger to hold 10 - 14psi(low) to 16psi(high).
option 1, B16a + turbo
b16a, toda cams, toda springs, pistons, rods, and other stuff total $4000 - $5000
option 2, B16b + turbo
B16b $3500 - $4500 and leaving it stock (for awhile)
(Keeping in mind with the options i will be later down the track making the engine stronger to hold more boost.)
With the cranks on the b's, was wondering if the b16b is stronger than the b16a?
Any help would be great.
I have been researching on many forums, so dont tell me to try search. (thanks)

i'd be going with option one, if your considering changing the internals later
BTW.. should be in forced induction section

ive seen one for sale for 2500 at wreckers...(cant be stolen)....
and there was a trader here (reputable) also selling it for 3500..
u just gotta shop around
All above is for engine only (correction made)

$3500 ain't for a half cut mate. It's just the engine, not even with a gearbox. There's no way you could find a B16B half cut for the price.
Either option is going to make it get up and go. I would do it properly the first time and build it right.

exactly.. jdmyard sold one the other day and he was asking $7.5k for the half cut, which seemed to be a good price too

are you saying you can get all that engine work done for 4-5 grand including the half cut?

B16a will prolly give you the better result...

i'd tend to think the b16b would offer better results if it was turbo'd with stock internals

I agree, its a case of hisher rpm = more power.
Its just not a cost effective route.
go the B16A if you plan on a rebuild, and spend the saved money to better effect.

i dont have a half cut yet but i have contacts on parts and stuff, and with that it is a estimated price tag. and if u look around over in new zealand and also in japan u can pick up cheap b16b, just gotta know the right ppl, its not wat u know its who u know.
i'm more looking at the performance side of it, not the money, but i'm also looking at a good platform to work from, i.e if i get a stock b16a i would need to work it a lil bit just to be on the safe side so i can run 10psi - 14psi, but if i get a b16b i can run 14psi safe.
i understand that i will be doing a rebuild later on down the track, but that will be awhile, (untill i need more power and torque) and from the parts of the b16b, ie cams and springs i can sell and get some money back, whereas a b16a cams dont go for much $$$$.
the turbo i will be running is t28 high flowed making around 300hp, with a apexi power fc, bigger injector, fuel pump, cooler, stainless steel dump pipe, manifold, exhaust and a titanium muffler, and more
but i really wanna know is the b16b crank is stronger or the same as a b16a, cause no point me doing this conversion if it is the same, as i dont really wanna upgrade the crank.
Many thanks for ur input guys

i'm not sure if the b16a and b16b crank is the same.
But 99% sure the b16a crank will be fine for whatever you plan to do

They arent the same
B16B has more counterweights to support higher rpm operation
