Well the time has come to step up. We've just bought a K20a half cut to put into our 85 civic. Our best time with the B16a is 13.42 and best mph was 103 with 100kw at the wheels. With this engine we are looking for 140kw atw with intake, exhaust and K-PRO. With this car we won the first sports compact round at Jamboree in ALL MOTOR. Hopefully we can get the car ready for the second round at WSID. Updates as we have them

the half cut cost 8400 without brakes/suspension from Jap Connections

ghost: the car wieghts 780kg with driver (75kg) in race trim and the
13.4 was done with 225/45/14 BFGoodrich Drag T/A's (street tyres)

thanks paul1985....Still haven't taken delivery of the half cut.. Will need to fabricate custom engine mounts and want to get billet axles.

Current fuel system on our civic should be adequate but will need to buy an aftermarket fuel rail (any sugestions?). Just getting parts together in the next couple of weeks.

Heres a pic of what we bought

everyone in the US seems to be using golden eagle and/AEM fuel setups (rail, lines and FPR)

If u need parts for this project, i suggest PM'ing EG5 or check out his trader section on here under "JDM Yard", he is a trader and may very well be able to source u K-series parts.

You could probably get mounts imported so u dont have to have custom ones made up, there are also a few sets of axles already made for this setup u can buy from hybrid-racing and hasport (and a few other companies i think)... try www.hybrid-racing.com and www.hasport.com .. also be sure to check out www.k20a.org all the info u will ever need for this swap will be on that forum.

Best of luck dude
good to see there are more people in Aust giving the K a go.

very nice, that thing would f%^&ing fly. great project, im very interested in seeing how u go, be sure to keep us posted. i recomend checking out this site.. http://www.karcepts.com/
his company sells shifter mounting kits, which is a must IMO. The problem is they havent got one for your model car yet, but people have bought the Karcepts Shifter Mounting Kit for the EG and managed to modify it to suit your model civic. Send the guy an email asking about this, he is a great guy and will help u out greatly. This will save u having to do alot of work and cutting into your firewall etc and of course mounts your shifter in a great position. Its also only $175 USD (not shipped)

Did u end up checking out hybrid-racing? they got alot of great products that would help u and Will, one of the people who runs the place would do anything for his customers. Things that u could source from there are.. conversion harness (unless u are a wiring freak!), axles, radiator gear (needs to be relocated). They can also supply u with other brand parts such as AEM, Golden Eagle + heaps more incase u need other gear for your swap.

Paul1985: I've actually known all the web sites you've listed for quite a while now (as I've been wanting to do this coversion for about a year), but thanks for letting me know. As for the karcepts shifter mounting kit I've got a fully stipped interior and have no problem cutting the firewall so it wouldn't be much use. Are you gonna do a k20a conversion? Seems like you've done a lot of research in this area.

DOSHBTEK: hehe yeah, I am thinking of insuring the car (with the k) but might be a waste of money if I don't get the value I want.. but then again I'll be hesitant to run it on the street without it. Hoping to respray the car so the show will sorta match it's go (if it ever can hehe)

Ferrari: not to sure on the exact figure but being a 2001-2004 model in Japan I estimate aroung 30,000-50,000k's.

Tinkerbell: yeah not to many jdm k20's around.. I think I got the only one around at the moment.

Just to make clear to everybody what I bought for my money:-

* K20a Engine (with all manifolds)
* 6 speed gearbox
* Wiring harness, fusebox and all sensors
* JDM ECU
* Axles/driveshafts

So not exactly a half cut but almost everything I need for the conversion :)

Hey guys. To update the B16 engine has been taken out and put into another 86 AH civic hatch I bought as a daily and will be used for the next round of the sports compact series while the K20 is completed. The K20 has been fitted in the engine bay and fits without much trouble. Mounts are currently being tacked up with steel to be used as a template for alloy mounts to be fitted. Will post up pics soon

hey mate. a guy over on k20a.org has figured out a way of using the stock axles.. even for the 32mm... the only problem is its for an EG, but with your car it may also be possible, it'd be worth looking into anyway. This would be alot cheaper yet just as strong as some of the billet axles.

the way it is done is by custom fitting b-series axles to k-series axles.

Heres the DIY (very simple task aswell!)..
http://www.theksource.com/news/04/how-to-make-your-own-axles-for-eg-k-hybrids/

And heres the guys thread explaining about it.. http://www.k20a.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1594

Maybe u can ask in the thread whether it would be possible on your model civic. Its entirely upto u mate. Just trying to help out.. good luck.

Paul.

Dave: Hondata K-pro is already fitted to the ECU (in Melbourne by James?) and will be sent back up here as we speak. I saw you got 137fwkw out of a totally stock k20 except kpro! How much power should we be looking at with I/H/E mods?

Paul: thanks for the web sites. First thing we will be doing is mixing and matching the axles to see if we get can get them to fit. If theres no luck there we will get them machined to fit. If that's not an option we'll have to go strait to billet ones!

in the states DSS (drive shaft shop) make custom stage 6 billet K-series axles to any length, Team K and Skunk 2 run them on all there 9sec N/A cars.. so try them.. The link is on www.k20a.org

Finally after months of waiting we finally have some progress! :D

Both passenger and drivers side mounts have been cut which leaves the rear hang mount to be finalised.

As the picture suggests the engine is going to sit very forward and very low (will be 1-2 inches lower than in picture) for the primary purpose of getting the axles as strait as possible...doesn't hurt weight distrubution either :D

We've bit the bullet and have opted for custom billet axles which should be started this week... from there the engine bay will be resprayed and cleaned up then its onto ancillaries/wiring/exhaust and tune.

We are hoping to have the car up and running in a month so updates should come thick and fast from now on...

The K20 actually has four mounts in its natural habitat with the addition of the front mount hooked onto the subframe. Its really not needed on the swaps. Most chassis that doesn't have a subframe would normally just require the rear, passenger and driver's side mounts.

G AE82
12-02-2006, 10:44 PM
Menzy: Yes the original engine only had 3 engine mounts stock. To tell you the truth the front crossmember section doesn't have much strength to begin with.
All the strength is in the rear crossmember, where the rear hang mount is welded to.
I have a lot of faith in the fabricator of the engine mounts due to his experience with drag racing chassis (namely Top Doorslammer).
That being said we'll only really know if three mounts are enough until we do one thing... RACE IT!!! :D

if you wanted a trick, the water pipe connection on the front of the motor can be filed and then turned 120 degrees around so you can mount the radiator on the other side of the car and then run the filter straigt down into the bumper.

The car originally had a b16a and the inlet manifold was very close to the firewall. We had problems as the engine twisted (broke) the rear mount frequently. The dents are a result of this and the numerous times the engine had to come out to fix the problem.

Exhaust is started and will be finished this Wednesday and driveshafts should arrive next Monday so everything is comming together very nicely.

I'm curious as to what you guys think it will do down the quarter??? I have my own estimations as to what it will do based on previous all motor performances but I just don't want to spit out any numbers :p

Great work. Just curious if you had to get an engineered cert at all? or is it still within the range where you don't need to?

If you did, can you recommend the place where you got it done? I need to go down that route very soon.

Cheers.

car looks awesome. im guessing it would pull mid-high 12's. some guys in the US manage to pull 13.2 on street tyres, stock engine. Your car is alot lighter so hopefullly alot faster aswell. Good luck with your run!

Car is running, but the driveshafts haven't turned up yet. Were sent Friday afternoon on an overnight service from Sydney. Chances of making it to the track tonight are slim unless they turn up this morning.

Update: Got the driveshafts today, everything is now fitted up.
Car will be dynoed tomorrow and hopefully will pull a good number.

Even if the car was drivable the Test n Tune was cancelled at willowbank because of rain so it didn't matter.

All that matters now is that the car is ready for Mini-Jam and that I can drive the car properly. Me thinks it's going to be a little harder to drive with a solid centre, full faced clutch and a new hydraulic setup :p

Just did a 12.96 @ 110.38mph on the first and only run!

Car was launched a too high a revs and exhaust manifold fell apart in first gear (bolts loosened off at slip joints).

Second run we lowered the revs and tyre pressurses and snapped a CV on the start line by the looks of things. Anyway the car was towed from the track.

We're very happy with the mph and things can only get better from here!

I will try to post up the video of the run even though it is very crappy quality (it was done on a digital still camera)

Went to the track again and broke another one...this time passenger side. We're using the local driveline services (I think) Cv's. Now we're upgrading to OEM Honda cv's which are four times the price, so hopefully they won't break. Taking it back next wednesday ready for compak attack!

New All Motor FWD Street Tyre Record!!!

Just ran a 12.76 @ 112.33mph, short shifting with no burnout and walking off the line. Second run was the same but mis-shifted into second and got a 13.4 @111mph. Third time big burnout and launch and this time broke the inner cv! When will we get some luck? Getting it fixed for Compak. Looks like I'm going to be babying it the whole meet!

DynoDave: Thanks mate, should be alright. Might get in touch with you and the Online boys before friday!

tinkerbell: Yeah hope to see you there!
