Hey guys,
I know there are a few of you on these forums that are interested in SQ sound systems and participate in SQ competitions, so I'm looking to pick your brains..
I'm after a decent 10inch subwoofer to add to my system. I'd like something that's very linear and uncoloured when used in a relatively small enclosure. I have a '94 EG Civic hatch and ideally I'd like the enclosure to take up only around half the hatch space, hope thats a good idea of the size of the enclosure I'm talking about. I listen to a wide variety of music (from classical to electro-dub and everything in between.. and some things not) so it needs to be flexible in the kind of music it sounds good with. I'm a classically trained musician so I've got a pretty good ear for musical detail and I don't want any buzzy, doof-doof system for my car.
I have about 300-350 bucks to play with.. My front stage is about to be changed but it will be 6.5 inch 2 way splits, most probably Focal K2 or Polyglass series..
Any ideas would be appreciated, Cheers, Cap.

Image Dynamics IDQ10D2 V2 (or IDQ10D4 V2, depending on amp you're using) at $399 RRP (street price would be a little lower) could be something to look into.

Sound quality - These were the three best performers.
1st Place: Diamond Audio TDX10
The Diamond TDX10 is one of the best subwoofers I have heard in a long time. Smooth controlled extension (especially down through the lower frequencies – remember it’s a 10”). On the downside, whilst it will blur vision if you ask it too (it has the better part of 9” depth), don't go pushing it too hard because an SPL subwoofer it isn't. Modelled on a sealed enclosure the size of the enclosure size can remain quite small (our test enclosure was only 0.8cf).
2nd Place: Image Dynamics IDMAX12
The IDMAX possesses quite a heavy motor structure so running it with too little power (like 400-600 watts) will usually cause the amplifiers damping factor to enter the stratosphere. However if you have the power to control it, it's high excursion length allows it to extend deep into the subsonic regions and give that gut rumbling bass the IDMAX range is famous for. The other great facet of the IDMAX is that when it's pushed it will deliver!
3rd Place: Boston G512
Quite a few people we know use these now and they're fast gaining a reputation for being a serious SQ subwoofer. Thanks to its design it can extend very deep and remain controlled, even when the pressure is on (no pun intended). And with its three inch excursion, getting your vision blurred is only a matter of power… images/smilies/icon_cheesygrin.gif
Others worthy of a mention:
Vibe Space12
JL Audio 12W7
Soundstream Exact 10
These are the ones that still sounded fantastic but sadly didn’t quite make the top three.

You might also consider 8"s as will increase your options.

Thought about an 8 inch but I don't think it would pair particularly well with 6.5 inch components, everyone I've spoken to has said that the best match for 6.5 inch components is a 10inch sub....?

Werd. :D
You definitely wont be able to get W6's or W7's at $300-$350 for sure, unless you buy them hot. But I agree with SiR JDMMY, if you're after a SQ sub go with JL Audio. When comparing their prices against other SQ brands such as Boston, Soundstream, Focal etc, JL Audio is definitely value for money. Obviously you don't compare JL with Pioneer cos Pioneer aint up in their league when it comes to SQ. :D
