lately i've noticed that my gear box makes a slight crunching sound when i change into 4th gear quickly... although if i do it slowly and at the right rev range it doesn't crunch.

you guys have any idea what it could be and if its a major problem or something small?

cheers in advance.

i got a similiar "problem".. its only when i quick shift straight down.. ie. from 1 to 2 and from 3 to 4... someone said the crunching noise is from the syncros..

Get some quality oil for your box
i have get RED LINE oil in mine
i think its called SHATTER PROOF
cost $120 for 3.7 ltrs
but works like a dream
my car used to crunch allways in 3rd and little in 4th
now only slightly in 3rd when i do it quick

Its easy just need a funnel and hose
garden hose will do just gotta cut it
one plug drains one plug fills its full when it overflows so cant overfill it
simple

I got a short shifter aswell

I used to have that problem when i shift to 3rd gear. I changed my gearbox oil with genuine honda gearbox oil and problem was solved. :)

more than likely your synchro's are starting to wear.

change your oil and see how you go.

could also mean your clutch is on it's way out!

LMAO !!
Exactly the same thing happened to me and you know what it was.
My gear synchros were worn. I bet thats what is wrong with yours.
Get it rebuilt now before you do more damage.

Mind you its a $1000+ job

redline shockproof

tried all of that and it made it a little better but accellerated the problem.

Steer clear of Redline shockproof, lightweight shockproof on worn Honda boxes :!:

Take that advice from someone who has had 3 rebuilds and 2 boxes

The problem with reverse is because it doesn't have synchros (has straight cut teeth). Do a search.

Honda's use 'engine oil' in their gearbox and it is supposed to be changed during regular servicing. However, if the oil is not changed or loses it lubrication properties, the synchros and bearings become worn. Changing the oil with fresh stuff is good but only if they are not badly worn. If they are really worn, fresh oil will make it worse so it might be worth pricing a secondhand box or a rebuild...

I'll second wynode on the reverse gear crunch thing. The only way of stopping it crunching that I know of is to bring the car to a complete stop.

Yeah thats what happens to my dc2 vtir with the reverse gear, if I dont come to a complete stop and put in reverse it will cruch like no tomorrow

Sometimes even if you are at a complete stop it will still catch. So what I do is put into fourth then reverse. Works like a charm!

yes my lude has had some 5th gear crunching but changed the tranny oil with genuine honda MTF.

after driving the car for 5-10 mins, it shifts perfectly fine - still being a little cautious, might change the oil again soon ;)
