checking an engine

Is there any way to check if an engine runs without it being in the car is there?

what can i do to check the condition of the engine if it's out of the car?

what sort of things can i check?

i'm going to see the engine tomorrow...

No way of knowing without it actually running... The dangers of buying a secondhand engine :(
Basic stuff like looking at spark plugs, using a spanner to rotate the crankshaft and checking the oil colour/condition. Basically, you should replace the water pump, timing belt and cam/crank/rear oil seals with any 'unknown' engine.
Other than that, buyer beware but warranties are good from a wrecker/importer...
