What causes a cloud of greyish smoke coming out from exhaust after hard accelerating (when decelerate)? When i rev up to say 6-7k and back down to idling speed, a cloud of greyish smoke puffs out from my exhaust and i can smell it... smells like oil burning. I did some reading abt faulty valve stem seals & valve guides... could it be one of those 2 problems? Is there anyway i can test and pin point the exact cause before i spend lots of $$$ on labour to replace new valve seals? can anyone help? My engine was just recently rebuilt and i believed new valve seals were used. How can i diagnose this problem accurately?

Bluish grey smoke is engine oil being burnt in your combustion chamber.
What did they do when you had your engine rebuilt?? Cause it sounds like piston rings are allowing oil past. Performing a compression test is about the only way to confirm that rings are stuffed. Get a mechanic (other than the one who worked on your car) to do it for you.
It all depends on what was done in the engine rebuild...
OH and forget about my last post on your gearbox layshaft... It is engine knock cause by excessive oil in your combustion chamber and that is bad!

I did compression test on all cylinders and they all read fine. Engine was only rebuilt a month ago, new pistons & rings. So i doubt it's faulty piston rings.. im guessing it could be valve seals... If anyone can tell me the symptoms of bad valve seals? Excessive greyish smoke blows out of exhaust when decelerating or stopping at lights straight after pulling it hard. It's definitely not rich smoke... it's oil burning cuz i can smell it realli bad. Can incorrect ignition timing would have caused this to happen? If were to replace valves guides/valves stem seal, how much $$ are we talking abt?

i have that problem,my car eats alot of oil aswell and causes white smoke to come out when i give it,eating up alot of oil also will cause vtec to cut off and cut back in ,check your oil you might be running low you dont wana kill your engine i goto top up oil every week :(

We had a customer that accidently wired up his car wrong when fitting a wolf 3d and one injector was being partially held open. It blew white smoke which is what happens when you seriously flood it, a slight richness is black smoke(see MAF turbo cars with an open exit blowoff valve)
I was half asleep when I posted, sorry.
Could be valve stem seals but it is not an easy job. Requires head off to be done properly. Did you have a full VRS gasket set fitted when your motor was rebuilt??
Did you test compression when the motor was both hot and cold??

mine blows alot of black smoke when ever i take it past v-tec on my civic vti and it has a cannon, mechanics say its just carbon build up, compressions and o2 sensors are all fine aswell. it never blows smoke if im just cruising, idleing or de-accelerating.
