Hello,
I hope i have been reading right and made the right assumptions. I have been reading a few us forums turbo d and d-series. Anyways i have been reading that they have been putting sohc vtec heads onto non vtec blocks calling it a mini me.
I had no idea about this to the other day. Am i reading right?
Its hard for me to understand because they have different engine codes dont they?
Anyways i have a 99 ek1 hatch i think my engine code is d16y4.
My goal in my car is to turbo charge it and make around 130kw atw's before any serious internal work.
I have been told that turboing this mini me is good because you get a longer rev range plus vtec with boost?
Can some one help me clarify that i am on the right track here?
How much could this conversion be done for and what are the nessecary parts required?
I hope i havent made a fool out of myself.
I think i got everything right there
thanks for your help.
james

d16y8 head will mate right up with that block. Then all you need to do is wire in the vtec. I believe you might need a new ecu as well? not too sure on that though.

If your going to boost i wouldn't bother with the mini-me. If you do want to go ahead with it you might as well build you motor to begin with.

what he sed ^^

boost the y4 man, any dseries kit will fit.

you will need to do something with your ecu, as you need to change fuel and timming for the ner cam shaft as well as activate the Vtec solenoids

yeah what i thought was new head and bolts with a ecu?

a guy here in perth has done the mini-me swap recently and is using the ECU from the D16Y1 (SOHC - Non Vtec). you'll need an ECu from a D16Y8 as its OBD2. this works fine but there are big improvements to be had.
he did his in an EG so its a D15B block with D16Y1 head. it ended up bumping the compression ratio to around 11.0:1
but you'll need a new stand alone ecu once you turbo it

does anyone have any idea how much it would cost?

too much just do what everyone else says and turbo your current motor.

a mini me swap is cheap. the guy here did all for under $1500 parts and labour inc a head recon. its now as quick, if not quicker than a vti or si. and the response is excellent due to the high comp ratio.
bang for buck its a pretty good mod.
mind you the comp ratio might not be as high for a d16 so it could still be suitable for a turbo conversion

just force feed the engine as is...

like sivic said, your compression ratio will go up if you do the mini me... but you want a lower comp ratio if you go turbo charged tho! prolly around 9.0:1 i think? plus tthe money you could save from doin the mini me could go into a better forced induction set up!

look up some turbo d-series setups from the states, some have been pulling good numbers with stock internals!

yeah, if your going turbo the cost of a min me would prob cover a new camshaft, camgear and valve springs. and maybe a slightly thicker headgasket. pretty sure crower make camshafts for turbo applications

Hmmm....this seems to be what I might be thinking of doing. Can anyone point me in the right direction to get more information regarding this 'mini'me' conversion.
Is there are a lot of components and labout involved? I noticed 'sivic' mentioning someone doing it for like $1500 inc parts and labour.

Thanks in advance for the help and info. :D

should also make sure you get a dizzy according to the type of ecu you use.
ie.
obd0 ecu with a obd0 dizzy
obd1 ecu with a obd1 dizzy
obd2 ecu with a obd2 dizzy

otherwise u'd run into problems
