today i was practicing my starts. cos i downloaded an integra that takes off at 6000rpm so naturally i tired to do the same. i got about 20 starts in then my clutch stop gripping. so how close is my clutch to the end?? its fine now. i put the car in 5th at 20km/h and floored it and it didnt slip

heres the video i was checking out

How much would you pay for a heavy duty clutch for a EG Civic?

Thats crazy man!! The only time i practice high RPM launches is when im dragging someone.......stock clutches were certainly not made for that abuse!

i've often wondered about the whole clutch slip thing too.

basically, my understanding of things leads me to think that a clutch would be most likely to start slipping when you reach the peak torque point under a high load. so like, 3rd or 4th gear at 6k rpm or wherever your motor has it's torque peak on WOT, up a hill...

yet i hear many people say to put the car under load at a lower engine speed... i would have thought this would be more a test your your motors ability to lug from low rpms than the clutch's ability to hold up to abuse.

who knows ;)

Thats the point! Your engine isnt making large amounts of power....a large load is being places on the clutch (to stall)....so if it doesnt stall....you know your clutch is weak.

well, what puts more load on the clutch?
peak engine torque and open throttle, or open throttle and high engine load (but lower torque output).
what causes clutch slip? engine load or torque, or a combination of the two?

as a real world example- my clutch is on it's way out now (90k km- with occaisional abuse thrown in), i cannot get it to slip at low rpms with high engine loads. it just won't do it. however, when i go all out and change gears -say, in a traffic light GP- i get a moment of slip in the clutch, where i once got tyre chirpage. it's fine on the launch (maybe 3k-4k rpm) but dies when i shift...

ah well, time for someone with some more experience to chime in methinks.

I kinda see what you are saying.....but it isnt as finite.

If you chuck it in 5th from a standstill and it doesnt stall then you know your clutch is gone.

How can you be so definite using your method?

i guess your method would indicate a completely dead clutch, whereas the symptoms i am seeing indicate a terminally ill clutch?

LOL....i dunno mate.....like you said before....wait for an expert.....iv neva had a clutch die on me

My clutch only slips under high load/heep of heat + high load it wont catch at all (like 1st->2nd shifts). Its due to the increased torque i have though, and needs more clamping power to handle it.. the clutch only has 20k on it.

A clutch is like brake pads. Normal wear and tear isn't covered by warranty.

They would only cover the cluth if it was a mechanical fault which didn't come up as a result of abuse.

clutch plate works in the same way as a disc pad on your brakes
if its worn, it wont clutch onto the flywheel as good

wynode- i already got my brake pads replaced under warranty

you should do some burnouts and claim the tyres on warranty as well :P

i just completely fked a heavy duty clutch about 3 weeks ago. put a stockie clutch back in with a new machined flywheel. my stockie clutch is holding up far better than the heavy duty bitch ever did. but thats my personal experience, i am sure every one else will disagree with me here!

main thing i wanted to say was, that wasn't a 6k launch, its a 5k launch and revs kick up to 6k until the bloody wheels stop spinning ...

toby- i already got new tyres from the dealer. i was doing burnouts in the car for a while then my mate notice that the two rear wheels had different tyres on. so i swapped them to the front and the dealer had to change them cos by law the driving wheels tyres have to be the same......so new tyres for me
