Does your car make a loud whining noise in reverse. It just doesn't sound right. Would you know what it could be.

Did you just recently buy an EM1, or just relised this now,?

hrmm you may have to be a lil more specific on describing that sound, like is their something clickin, tapping, is their an unsuspected chirping LOL, coz on reverse it does make a wierd whining noise but it aint that annoying:o

I've had it for couple months now. Same Sound all along.

It's not that it's annoying, but it's alot louder that other cars i've have driven. Just wondering if its normal on EM1's.

in that case must be normal.. its like VTEC on reverse HAHAHAHAHAH but best way to compare is if u ever meet another person with an EM1 or see a EM1 reversing, hear his sound.. does the sound only come up when your reversing real fast and its abit more milder when ur reversing gently?

Yeah it gets louder when i'm going faster, but it's still there when im going very slow.

sounds normal then, but check out someone elses EM1 incase, to be extra sure:thumbsup:

Yeah, the EM1 does sound a bit whiney in reverse. It sounds like it requires a lot of effort in reversing, doesn't it?

Anyhow, I never thought much of this cos I remember a DC2R sounding quite the same in reverse.

yeah it sound like the engine is working harder than it is, and i hate to reverse, its hard to do it right in the em1

i drive an em1, and yes it's very normal, i havent been in a manual car that hasnt made a whining noise when reversing.

i believe the vtec solenoid does not kick in, in reverse or in neutral. i have reversed and revved it up to around 5000rpms and there is a normal high pitched hummmmmmm.........:thumbsup:

what model is an em1? i have a eg vti and my reverse is pretty loud aswell.

Didn't think of it that way, but it does sound like a RC car.:D

Sounds as though it's pretty normal then. I guess i shouldn't worry about it.

duck0_o so wut exactly was the problem? as others have said, i assumed it was normal.. and hoppers is DAMN far for me! :p

I have an ek4, so same gearbox/engine as em1... sounds the same, no problems with it

my em1 is noisy in reverse, but to me so is every other manual car...

id suggest u dont worry bout it...u hardly use reverse neways

I think this is because the reverse gears are straight cut, which causes the high pitch whinning noise you get when reversing, my car does the same thing.

Many people also cut their normal gears straight, which causes the whinning noise in 1-5 gears.

mine does it on my b18c when i let go of the gas my gearbox rattles :confused:

I'm no gear expert but i remembered reading something about helical gears vs straight-cut gears and how they work. But i've did some researching on the net and found a site that explains it, or atleast i think it does, couldn't be bothered reading it all. :P

The whinning noise is common in most cars.

i think everyone has noticed a similar sound on various car but not as loud
but i think the EM1 sounds much louder than most other cars (at least all those i have noticed/driven) so its more unusual, and tends to make ppl worry more
