2 subs or one

hey just wondering whether its worth the trouble of spending another 200 bucks on another 12inch 800 watt pioneer sub and put it together wif me onther pioneeer...same model...but my question lies here...i have a 2 channel amp mtx 300 watts..i know you can bridge tow subs on the one amp...i have one one the amp at the moment whould bridging another sub onto the amp so it runs 2 subs loose bass and loudness...if so should i stick to one

chances are you're going to overload your amp and itll cut into power protection. You should probably upgrade your amp to something a bit more powerful.

i dont think you will notice much difference, how ever i wouldnt turn the gains upto much or say bye to your amp.

I don't understand what you're doing, I might be reading it wrong. Do you have the 2 channel amp bridged mono to power the sub you have? another problem could arise with the impedence of the subs, if you have two 4ohm subs and your amp is only 4 ohm stable in bridged mode then you won't be getting the most out of you amp.

I'll try to explain what he means.

ok, Jared is using a MTX Road Thunder 300 watt, 2 Channel Amp, running an Pioneer 12 inch free air sub (in a box) and it doesn't sound bananas.

His questions is this, Is it worth buying another sub, knowing that to sound right it would have to be another pioneer free air. and run them both off the one amp, utilising one channel per sub. I say no, as it would sound worse.

My advice was this, get a decent box until he starts working full time and can opt for a good system.

I suggested Dual Type R 12's in properly designed boxes using two Audison Mono-Block amps with nice wiring and gold terminals and sound deadening.

What do you reckon? I am not up on the latest brands. obviously he doesn't wanna spend the earth.

conisdering his car is a prelude = bigger car, def get dual subs in dual box
rockford punch PS1 are great aswell (my mate has the base model alpine type r/s 12", dont know if its the r or s model? always get confused - and him and i both reckon mine performs much better, we have a similar set up but dif sized cars. ) the alpines are still a GREAT sub though

$300 for the ps1 12", they are only the base model in the ps series but they pack a load for what they are. i know you can get a dual system in dual custom rockford ported box for around $700 from lifestyle store (depending on their special for the month) as for amps, dont know a whole lot about monos and such, but you will definatley need a 4 channel for these (two bridged to each)

only thing is, if he wants another sub, then you need the extra box and the extra amp... if you can afford it then def go it. you wont regret it later for sure. i see it as a bit of an investment cause i can take it all out and chuck it in my next car if i sell it. so its worth spending the money in my opinion.

How big is his sub box? free air is generally just equal to a giant sealed enclosure. I agree with you jared, I'd guess if he can get the right enclosure for his sub then he'll be happier with the sound.

dont waste anymore money now if you intend to buy better stuff down the track.

If you put the specs of a free air sub into a box building program the recommended enclosure size would be close to the size of the entire boot.

If you do decide to go new subs and amps, forget about using 2 or 4 channel amps to drive subs, that is not what they are optimised for.

Just buy one big monoblock rather than 2 smaller monoblocks, gain matching 2 amps with or without the right equipment can cause issues, plus monoblocks are designed to run subs.

yeh was reading up on monoblock amps and sound the way to go...im lookin at transforming me bac seat into a custom set up.....wif two subs and use ya advice of using one big mono amp...i need a new head unit as well....it was a pioneer 1750 and the preout got ****ed by me mtx amp so im running the amp through the speaker wires...ohh god loss of bass there....sub is in a wooden home made box and the box is starting to come lose and has a hole in the back so the sub sends air out of the hole and it sounds like dog shit so im might look at getting a temporary box...anyone have any suggestions on wat a nice sounds sytem would be...im not going back to pioneer...all i want is two 12 inch subs...a monoblock amp and a nice head unit...i cureently have pioneer 6by9's(they produce good sound) and alpine 6inch in the doors

if u get 2 subs u need a new amp ur amp is too weak, ur amp is gonna be trying too hard and send out too much distortion to ur subs and u'll melt ur voice coils...

why with atleast 2 sets of preouts? just use a rca splitter, but if u can try to get a HU with a preout of atleast 2V, the JVC HU are pretty good even the ones around $200 have a pre-out of 2.4V. and yeah u got a budget in mind?

when you split 1 rca pre out you lose the ability to fade front to back and h/u with 2 or more sets aren't that much more than any other h/u.

as for pre out voltage, 2v is pretty standard, if you look at the Alpine range of headunits most of them come with 4v preouts.

Why higher voltage pre outs you ask?

means you dont need to turn the gain up on your amp as high to match the h/u voltage, therefore making life easier for your amp.

with a $300 sub budget I'd be looking at just one better quality sub with dual 2 ohm coils as $300 for 2 will only see you buying shit.

1 good quality sub with 800rms will sound alot better(and even be louder) than 2 shit subs.

Yeah they are 2nd hand subs but you'll be able to buy above your budget as far as quality goes and most of the guys on there dont sell crap.

well depends how loud u want ur bass to be.. but if u have a low budget i think u should just stick to having 1 12" sub. rather than 2.

it would be a different story if u were deciding between a one 15" sub and 2 12" subs..

I only have one 12 inch sub, with a large box, larger than recommended.
Mates have said its really good and enjoyable!

If you want to be heard 2 streets away then go for 2 subs and a good amp, if not and just want to enjoy the bass of your music just get one sub, with an appropriate amp!
