Recently bought a 2nd hand DC5, it's been having a very tough time over bumps and potholes. So i took it into Pedders for a quick check up. The technican told me that the previous owner has put King Springs on the car and the reasoning why i keep hitting the bottom of the car is because the springs are too weak (is this true?) and in a true salesman's style went ahead to try and sell me Sports Ryder suspension kit ($650 all up). I have two questions

(1) Is that true about the "weak" King springs
(2) Is that the reason i keeping hitting the road when i go over bumps (even really small dips)
(3) What recommendations (for new springs) would you guys suggest for a low but not as harsh a ride (when a similar budget)

Also what would be your recommended ride height (from previous posts it seems that a 1.5-2 drop would be best for performance and comfort)

SPOON or kg/mm springs
do not go with aussie made

Thanks tanghy,

what are kg/mm (as you can see i really have no idea) and what costs are we talking about

Whiteline also mentioned that they would cost me about $500 for their control springs .. is that a no no as well?

Thanks

go to club rsx and do a search in aussie forums for spoon/ kg/mm springs
the topic has been beaten to death there already

if i had to choose again, i would go for spoon springs to save the money and to gain reasonable handling for the price..

king springs are probably the worst things to get if you want performance handeling

also is your car the R or base model?

Put it this way.

Kings are better than Pedders, and Kings are shit. go to Whiteline Automotive. www.whiteline.com.au

I honestly do not belive you "need" to buy springs from overseas. If you wish, fork out for some Eibachs, or something really nice

How many Kms on the car BTW

Tofu
07-03-2004, 07:27 PM
but Eibachs are also from overseas..

WTF

I said "need to buysprings from overseas, and said "if you wish", not Eibachs are made in australia.

Read carefully before you attempt to OWN anyone

"I honestly do not belive you "need" to buy springs from overseas."
- that's your suggestion/opinion, fine, i can accept that.

then right after it, you suggests to buy Eibachs., which are from overseas.

you're suggesting Eibachs which costs more than Spoon and Whiteline

Have you ever used the Spoon Springs? Lets be specific and say, in a DC5? Or do you just like to brag about brand names... Oh, I thought so

I said "NEED". Need means "you have to have". I said, "you do not need", which means, you have a choice, and you don't have to buy springs from overseas. I know exactly what I said. The Eibachs are very nice, wipe the floor with spoon springs, but are more expensive. If you look to japan for suspension parts, your a goose.

hahah
you make me laugh man
of course we are commenting on what we know
and yes, i have sat in a dc5 with eibach and a dc5 with spoon springs
both are dc5R

that's why i asked if his car was an R or not..
and your comment about looking to japan for suspension parts is a joke??...LOL
that comment itself is a joke

McChook

you *sat* in both. How about drive it - not passenger, DRIVE. How about a track, take each car there?? No?? Hmmm.....

Eibach is very good indeed(i had them on dc2r), so does spoon, one thing i dont like bout Eibach is they wont disclose the specs of the springs (spring rate, material) :? peace

McChook
07-03-2004, 08:53 PM
Thats basically why the Eibachs were chosen - they did the job, no screwing around with getting customs made

Thanks for all the advice guys. I've got the base model and for $600 should probably look towards the Spoon springs (except i'm in Canberra)..how much for installation?

Do you guys happen to have pics of DC5 with any of these springs as well as the size of rim etc..just so i can get a feel at what i'm getting (ie looks, "gap" - currently stock wheels)

Atom
08-03-2004, 10:28 AM
i guess i don't want to look like ANS now do i...

So Spoon springs for $600 .. where can i get them , which model and how much for installation.

Thanks everyone for providing some much needed advice.

Tofu

installation is around $200 to $300, including wheel alignment
getting spoon, tein and kg/mm springs isn't as hard as you may think

here are some examples
Tein S-tech springs

Atom - I am in Canberra. You can go and visit Jerry at J Racing for springs. Tell him Simon sent you. Alternatively, you can source some through tanghy or z10 as they are 2 good guys.

Installation in Canberra - I used Capital Steering and Suspension in Fyshwick for my H&R springs on my DC5R, but most shops should be able to do it. If money is not an issue, see Chris at Inline Steering and Suspension in Queanbeyan. He is the best and charges for it too.

Good luck.

Guys ,

Another dumb question.. whats the difference and which is better - straight or progressive springs?

tanghy
08-03-2004, 10:10 PM
progressive for road
straight for track

Atom
09-03-2004, 10:26 AM
the saga continues...

went to see Chris @ inline and he said the "springs were on the bump stops"? :( also he says that they king springs that have been cut  and that the rear sway bar was sitting on the exhaust :x so have to get it fixed ASAP...if anybody can give some explaination to the first problem that would be great...

Currently they are sitting @ 33cm front and rear..(is this good/bad?)

What would they be if i had Spoon springs?

McChook
09-03-2004, 11:13 AM
Means that the springs have collapsed and don't work - thats what happens when you use Kings. Worse when you cut them

Tofu
09-03-2004, 04:19 PM
cutting the springs usually means the owner wants to achieve as low a ride as possible...
most definately get new springs asap
if you can't wait to get spoon or anyother brand...then i guess pedders is your only choice...

poid
09-03-2004, 04:32 PM
i'd say Kmac will do you well...

if you can find out the specs (ie height, stiffness) of one of the name brand springs you want simply tell Kmac to make em to that spec. Should have it at your day a couple of days later for around $350

cheebye

king springs sag after a while and they are the worst investment u can do. for awesome springs, go tein's. for progressive rate ones, u can't really go past them. I got a price of about $450 for a set. otherwise, I'd be looking at a choice of good spring/shocker set like koni shocks and tein springs, etc..

McChook
10-03-2004, 04:47 PM
I have found every set if tein's too stiff

cheebye
10-03-2004, 04:50 PM
u bother to match them with good shocks? or just put them on the factory struts? hope it's not the latter. btw, I had a ride in a wrx with full tein coilovers and must say they improved the handling by leaps and bounds but the ride was firm not harsh - fkn awesome.

McChook
10-03-2004, 05:05 PM
have used them with the matching tein shocks, proflex shock, dms shocks and konis

shit shocks....
