Hi guys, just now we found out that my mate car which is Accord 1998 automatic, the timing belt was snap. he was driving with high rpm and when it changed to second gear the engine was dead. we try to start the engine and it won't start anymore.

What do you guys think with the engine. do we need to rebuild the engine or just change the timing belt?

take it to your mechanic dude.
i snapped my belt while driving normally in an auto EG civic..
all i had to do was swap the belt.. your mechanic will be able to tell u if its caused other damage. You can bend valves when snapping the timing belt

im not too sure, but if they are bent, that means bad news and more than likely a fair bit of $$$ to fix, i'll find my thread for u on this, i swapped my belt with the help of my TAFE mechanics teachers...

I hope you did not do much damage.

I had a simular problem on my old Celica at about 3000rpm. I bent all 4 exhaust valves, cracked all 4 valve guides. You can also damage pistons and the head.

Get a mechanic to check it out.

Do you think there's any sort of oil leaks from the engine? If it only has done 40000km on the belt, is it likely that there's some oil leaks, and soaked the belts... SNAP!

Get some quality belts mate.
I got my machenic to order some good ones made in US. Already have 80,000 km on it, doesn't show any wear nor cracks.

It will generally be the camshaft seal that will leak and put oil all over the belt first.

factory OEM timming belst wont snap after 40000km if there less than 5 yrs old.
but if they have been oil soaked thats differnt. but very unlikely for a 98.

if its a 4 cyl or V6. form memory it should be a F type engine and posibly not free runnig, dont mean to scare you. hope im wrong.

the mechanis said, that there is one sensor beside the timing belt and that was felt off and hit the timing belt. thats why the timing belt not working properly and snap. something like that. i'll try to get more information for this.
