cover anything plastic (eletrical wires, fusebox, etc) the rest is usually ok just dont leave it on the engine bay too long like the actual painted metal. If u wanna do a reallly good job you can take out the engine and grab a toothbrush

Be careful as some strong degreasers can stain/mark the aluminium of your engine block. Brake cleaner is somethign that you could try....just cover all electrical bits and wash the degreaser off :)

I recon you should only cover your siren ( if you have one )
just dont spray water directly on your dizzy and altenator.
then blow off the water wioth compressed air.
thats the best way to do it

i just bought one of degreaser in a can from supercheaper for like $2. Spray the bay where it is oily wait 5min hose it down and to top it off i used tyre shine to make the bay look shinny.
Here how it looks

My engine bay is not as dirty since the car is only a year old. It's good to maintain the engine bay after you have degreased it though.
I just get a nice cloth, spray bug and tar remover (citrus based) on it and wipe off the grease. If it is tough, then I spray a bit directly onto the grease as well. But totally avoid the electricals. To rinse, I use another cloth and a spray bottle with water. Then I go over the plastic and rubber parts with a sponge that has 303 protectant sprayed on it.

becarefull not to get water in the spark plug holes of oil on your flywheel through the peep hole thing
i have a 3g i dont know if the later engins have this hole
and obviously no water on the electrics like the distributor cap or something silly like that lol
oh and the hole where the flywheel is can be seen in redliners pik between the radiator cap and hose above the engin number i think
