View Full Version : Decision between Building an LS or Geting A VTiR
2NTICN

Ive currently got a 91 LS and i wana spend lots of money on it. Paint job, carbon here and there, rims, suspension, vtec conversion(either b16a or b18c) but i dont know if i will be wasteing all that money because of the age of the car. Do you guys reckon im better of buying like a 96 Vtir and just chucking sum rims and lowering it or should i put my money into the LS. i think when it comes to resale time, the Vtir will still be worth more with less work done to it and i wont get nearly the money back i spend on the LS.
FR33K
01-11-2005, 08:21 AM
you wont get your money back modifying any car you spend your money on...
2NTICN
01-11-2005, 09:11 AM
dude, that is obvious, but do you guys really a think an LS is worth the money or the Vtir has better potential and is newer looking???
or should i save and buy a Type R,lol
ITEAZR
01-11-2005, 09:12 AM
dude i would rather a vtir.. if u get a vtir it would look way better than the LS.. and u can sort of make it look like a type r maybe..
_CiVIC_
01-11-2005, 09:13 AM
buy the typeR man... it came standard with the power, the looks, the overall performance. You wouldn't have to modify the R and it would still turn heads :)
save and get a typeR
seihoa
01-11-2005, 09:16 AM
yea get a dc2r and if u still have money modify the crap out of it =]
atleast the type r'z hold some more value = ]
or you can leave it stock with minor mods
it still would b a beast
2NTICN
01-11-2005, 09:22 AM
yeh i sorta like the shape of the vtir a lil better than the type R, but i guess i could get the type r and rip off the ugly spoiler.
however the round headlights turn me off both, and thats why im a big fan of the LS, short of doing a front end conversion on the dc2
2NTICN
01-11-2005, 09:23 AM
also the +94 Integras are very common, its not often you see a really sik modded LS cruising around. Is that for a reason though i guess?
seihoa
01-11-2005, 09:31 AM
well if you had a type R all modded up with custom spray job everything it still will be pretty much fully sick !!!
but yea i think buyin a vtir is cheaper ...
so you could keep the rest of the money for MODS...
seihoa
01-11-2005, 09:32 AM
yea man do the jdm front cut on the type r would look jst like the LS front kinda but heaps nicer too =] *drools*
FR33K
01-11-2005, 10:24 AM
just slam it and put on some rims and ull get alot of attention ;)
i could never sell my LS heeheh im gonna keep it forever.. 3 years and counting
2NTICN
01-11-2005, 11:29 AM
yeh im sorta in the same boat as FRR33K, once u get an LS you just dont wana let it go, however a front end conversion on a Type R would be so nice, ohhhh BADHBT, drules

The old... "if i keep saving maybe i can get the next model up"
this is my thoughts with these little dilemma's when it comes to money, cars and modding
LS + cost of modding = Price of DC2 VTIR
DC2 VTIR + cost of modding = Price of DC2R
DC2R + cost of modding = Price of DC5R
DC5R + cost of modding = Price of S2000
If you love to modify your car you can never win with the 'save up for the next model scenario' it's like a black hole for ur dollars.
What u need to do is set a budget, then ask yourself do you want to drive around in something you've spent time and money modding, or are you happy to get a relatively standard version of the next model up for the same sort of outlay. After you answer this you'll know what you want and what to do.

if you have the money.... choose which "shell" u prefer, and work that car. seeing as u are going to be going b series build either way, then just choose ur shell.
in my opinion, the dc2 looks better than the ls, da9, but that said, u may have other thoughts. search up on honda-tech and you will find some amazing da's around. and in my opinion, there are hardly any (if any at all) nice da's rolling around sydney.
even check out j-tuned online, they have an amazing da9.
built LS > stock dc2r IMO.

i think all us LS owners r a bit baised. personally, the reason i got 1 is coz they different, and u dont c much of em around. like fried said, just choose the body u like, then go nutz with it. at the end of the day, u can still do light conversions etc.. if u want 2.
does any1 have the link to the j-tuned online car? sounds pretty hot, wouldnt mind checkin it out.

I think everyone has there own opinion on which car they like better...trust me ive been there. Ive had my LS for over 2 years now and i went through the whole "do i keep the LS and mod, or buy a vtir"... now with much debate with mates and myself ive decided to keep the LS and do sumthing different.. or at least slightly uncommon, because the resale value on an LS isnt much and id need to save heaps for a vtir, and i have already done sooo much to my car that it would kill me to sell it. So coming soon will be a conversion B18a1 --> B18c (all depending on funds).
So long story short do what you feel is best... but as for me, i love my LS and im gonna make her even more lovable!

Hey FR33K any ideas where i can source one of those front lips from on that red Da9 man?
crispy
01-11-2005, 05:55 PM
you can get them through www.jdpengineering.com
Trust me they are pricey!! I got quoted sumthing like $350 for the lip and then like another $150 for shipping... or sumwhere near to there. I think i worked it out to be about $650AUD.
Edit: Darn couldnt find the email.. but they are expensive and really not worth the money. I mean they look shit hot, but id just get a carbon bonnet thru one of the traders here and not risk damaging a lip.. my $.02

01-11-2005, 06:24 PM

they are pricey coz they are carbon fibre (unless u can find a fibreglass/plastic copy)

Without really knowing you I would say the easier path to happiness is a vtir and then doing some minor mods when you have the cash in hand.
The path of the LS is fraught with danger. I would be very surprised if you could outline a budget to do-up an LS and have it come in cheaper than a stocko 96 vtir. If you are serious about a motor swap, wheels&tyres, some body mods and a respray it would be more than likely to start heading towards DC2R prices. You have to factor in other stuff too cause you are starting with a 15 year old car – suspension, seats, sound system and interior to name a few. Then there is all the nickel and dime crap where you are spending 20-50 bucks down at the parts store every Saturday. Don’t forget fitting out your toolbox either.
On the other hand, you might be a top notch home mechanic who spends an hour or too every night working on a car project and is able to do everything himself. In which case the LS is a great option.
Lastly, if you do go with the LS I would strongly recommend having a daily driver (charade or something like it) that you can drive while the LS is on axle stands.

if we were asking this question 2-3 years ago, the answer would be tougher, now vtir's are cheap as chips compared to before you'd be stupid not to go the vtir!
it's a car you can hang on to and imo good value for money and a great car to drive, not borinjg at all. are you stuck to honda? if not for 20 grand it can get you more- 180, gtst, 32 gtr, eg6, eg conversions, gsr, etc

Skylines and 180s, people expect them to be fast coz thats the image they portray, i think it is more respectable to have a misleading but nice looking car, if the LS is done properly i think it could show to make alot of VTiR's , Skylines, and 180s look bad

thanx everyone for your positive input, Gingangooly, i duno what kind of input u attempted to share with us but i hope u achieve wateva u want....
what i was attempting to share was that from a performance point of view, buying and modding a dc4 might be a better decision- building an ls/vtec isn't that much of a dark art anymore, and the dc4 chassis is a better starting point than the dc2 (non type-r) because it is both lighter and stiffer.
It looks the same, and is a fair bit cheaper, so why not? ;)

what i was attempting to share was that from a performance point of view, buying and modding a dc4 might be a better decision- building an ls/vtec isn't that much of a dark art anymore, and the dc4 chassis is a better starting point than the dc2 (non type-r) because it is both lighter and stiffer.
It looks the same, and is a fair bit cheaper, so why not? ;)
circle headlights!!!
LoL and the fact that it cost more as a starting base

WKDTEG has again hit the nail right on the f*&kn head!!!
I need to add $6k for a JDM front end conversion to a dc2/4 shell before i even start playing with engine conversions and paint and so on

If i had the money, then id piss of the ls and get a dc2 and get the jdm front end conversion. Ive always loved it and always will, but i rekon my LS is pretty good so ill be keeping her. Money is a major factor really as to what you can do and cannot. Ideally id love to get a rolling shell of a dc2 and then build build build!

you can get them through www.jdpengineering.com
Trust me they are pricey!! I got quoted sumthing like $350 for the lip and then like another $150 for shipping... or sumwhere near to there. I think i worked it out to be about $650AUD.
Edit: Darn couldnt find the email.. but they are expensive and really not worth the money. I mean they look shit hot, but id just get a carbon bonnet thru one of the traders here and not risk damaging a lip.. my $.02
Cheers crispy thanks for the link man

dude i will sell you my type r..... lol
mate it is a personal choice. dont ever think that mods will make the car more valuble
keep the LS i think they look good man, nice shape and you will be more original. Modify the car for yourself not for resale value, and by the time you decide to sell it you should have some money saved up for your new car anyway.
IN73GZ
16-11-2005, 12:35 PM
yeh im definately not doing it up for resale value, but u still have to consider how much money is going to be lost by the time ur finished, although i guess if its wat u really want then the money is not really being "wasted"

16-11-2005, 02:59 PM
haha this thread took me over 1 hour to read through.
IN73GZ... from the person that use to own he car u are driving.... KEEP the LS man. It is actually one of my biggest regrets selling it. Only reason i did is because i had a company car and couldbnt afford keeping the LS. I mean i know the euro is familish, but ppl still consider them sexy, yet i can confidently say i got 5 times more looks driving round the LS. I believe this is because of two reasons:
1) they are sexy especially for a car their age and
2) they are rare
They are a fantastic car, and with the price of conversions these days ie b16a's etc, i would have done it with no hesitation if i didnt get rid of it.
ive also driven many DC2 vtirs and i actually much prefer the comfort and ride position of the LS.
on the DA9 cruise about 3 months ago, we looked so awesome crusing around together just because of how slick the cars looked.
excuse the essay guys..
crispy
16-11-2005, 05:21 PM
There not all that rare, a good mint condition one may be rare but they are all over carsales! I still love the unique difference between an LS and any other cars.

I'm another chick who prefers and owns an LS. I much prefer the headlights to the round ones of the DC-1, although I have to say my ideal car would be the DC-1 (even if the headlights are slightly Accord-like).
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a82/strangerinparadise/misc/dc1front.jpg
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a82/strangerinparadise/misc/dc1back.jpg
I've considered modifying my LS, and as much as I love it, I'm a practical person who prefers no-fuss and low maintenance, so I think I will ultimately get a VTi-R. Maybe even as soon as next year (good-bye, LS).
I can't see myself putting in $$$ to do the LS up and then more $$ in maintaining it.
It all depends on where your priorities lie.
JMHO.
