For those that know, Im interested in knowing which would you prefer and WHY.

D16A8 - DOHC NON VTEC Engine (SI engine)

D15B - JDM Black top d15 SOHC VTEC

Assuming cost is the same and I have access to both engines. Purely based on the engine.

D16A8, purely coz it's DOHC i reckon it'll be a better base for work off.

even though the D15B is Vtec ya'll!

i had this dillema awhile back

did a heap of research etc..

i went for the black top because it seems to have more potential in terms of aftermarket internals (if u ever go down that path)...

similarly to the previous reason, some of the parts from other sohc vtec engines (eg. d16z6) are interchangeable, for example camshafts and camgears, some gaskets and seals etc...

vtec was another reason

Base engine for what? What are your aims? Or are we talking in the sense that it will be stock forever?

Sorry, yea it would probably be kept stock forever, possibly some I/H/E down the track.

Just an option im looking at for a potential future project. If I do go ahead with it, ill have the choice of these 2 engines, just wondering from people with D-series knowledge, which would be best (if there is really much difference). I may proceed to go ahead with a rebuild and internals later down the track, but its all up in the air atm. Its unlikely that i'll be doing FI work however.

Yeap i agree with Trav.

If your wanting to go for a more all out approach then go for the D15B as part are a hell of a lot easier to source.

Call me biased but the D16A8 has better torque down low and has more tuning potential via the cams.

JDM D15B VTEC, less capacity while making similiar power outputs, with VTEC street cred as well.

yeah i would go with the D16A8 for the extra low/mid torque.
but if you are planning the do some internal/head work later on you'll find it easier to get parts for the D15B.
lol VTEC street cred. i guess it matters for some ppl. even if they had a VEi - "i got VTEC yo!"

D16A8:
More displacement
DOHC
More local knowledge/support
It is more sports orientated engine over an economy based engine (imo)
They sell for a dime a dozen here/easy and cheap 2nd hand parts
