View Full Version : Type R Questions!

Hi All,

I think in the past 2 weeks I've read every thread which has "type r" somewhere in it :) Anyways, I really got my heart set on an R. I just got a few questions.

1. As a daily driver, what's it like? I'm still thinking I'll buy a second car, maybe a povo oldschool corolla as my main daily driver, and use my Type R for weekend and maybe once a week to work.
2. Police attention? I've owned two other cars in my life, a stock AU falcon, and stock 03 Lancer. Falcon, I would be completely smashed with a beer in my hand, and the cop will not look into my car. Lancer seems to be the same. What's the R going to be like? Can I expect to be pulled over more? I don't mind, I'll keep my mods legal etc, but still, if I were to get pulled over twice a night that would be piss me off.
3. Tyres? I think stock rims are 15" yeh? How much are decent soft compound racing style types for this size?
4. How much should I budget for my alarm? Is a ~$1000 Viper alarm going to be sufficent?
5. Is a decent sound system a waste of money/power? Couple 12's in the back, Alpine 9831, awesome splits at the front? I mean, the car doesn't vibrate like a tin can does it? (Obviously no osund deadening cos I wanna save weight..)

Thanks,
Matt.

type r are a great car and well put together, there is nothing wrong with them as long as they have been serviced correctly...good oils and all parts changed according to the log book is good.

wont get much with police attention is u leave it stock...might be attracted if you put a loud zorst and bling rims..and neons.

yes, comes with nice enkie lightweight rims..15 inch

stock immobliser is good already, but another alarm will go even better..peace and mind.

sound system? different strokes for different blocks my friend..thats ur call if u love to pump up the shiet. (will add weight)

what u want to know is if u are willing to pay for insurance if ur under 25 it can be pretty costly...

1 thing about all DC2/DC2R is the when u swap the headunit, u have to make a bracket to hold the deck in place!otherwise it'll keep falling out!

also invest in an alarm... dc2r's only come with imbolisers AFAIK. u wouldnt want to come back to ur car with missing recaros!

Insurance isn't too much of a problem, because I'll have to go Just Cars, It means no pay by the month, so $1000 up front sucks. But it's livable.

Soudn system, I know it'll weight me down, but a CF bonnet will make up for the 20KG loss. I just wanna know if it'll vibrate SOO much that it's not worth it.

Yeh I'll get a decent alarm, auto windows up, maybe even remote start.

Integras are very hollow cars!!! And the Type R has a lot of weight taken out of the doors compared to the other Integras, so if you put in a decent quality split system, you are bound to get a lot of door rattles when the bass comes in! You could fix that with a sound dampening kit but it will add a fair bit of weight onto the sides of your car.

I have a GSI with an alpine Type R split system and when i'm playing a song with decent bass, the door rattles like hell! You could do a nice system, but i would suggest not putting speakers in the doors, but instead having a custom set up next to where your legs are. Then mounting the splits on the dash. Also installing brackets into the rear speakers as the stock ones aren't too good (you can only fit 6" speakers in the rear, not 6" x 9"s).

Subs shouldn't be a problem concealed in the boot, and amps under the seats, should make for a decent sound system. If you want to do it right, first time, then get a custom install for everything, to make sure it sounds good, and doesnt add too much weight.

What R are you after mate? DC2R or DC5R?

I have never been pulled over! *knock wood* compared to my 180sx I previously owned. IMO it does not get as much attention as turboed imports.

I drive it everyday of the week and It's pretty fuel efficient man, a full tank lasts me 500km+.

I'm selling my DC5R which would suit your requirements so let me know if your interested! Looking at advertising it soon.

1. If you leave the car stock, it's ok for a daily. I wouldn't worry about a second car unless you want to dedicate the R for track only.
2. I have never been pulled over and I have had the car for 2+ years. Do not do big or noisy mods, drive sensibly on the road and you will be ok.
3. Falken RT215 for 195/55/15 is around $180 per corner fitted and balance.
4. If people want to steal your car, they will steal it. Get one with a mobile phone tracking if you want to be sure.
5. Waste of money, just get 3 way front and back speakers, plus a MP3 head unit. IF you want good sound system, don't buy the Type R.

Type R's are fuel efficient, obviously depends on the way you drive it. Easy to drive, fun to drive and when you feel like you wanna give it a little, you can. :) I reckon they're a great daily driver.

2. Police attention?
Honda's in general hardly get any cop attention when you're driven normally. Of course you'll get some attention when you fang it everywhere.

3. Tyres? I think stock rims are 15" yeh? How much are decent soft compound racing style types for this size?
Yes as said above, Type R's come with 15" Enkei rims. If you want a nice set of tyres, try the Falken Azneis. My bro has them on his R and IMO they are a great street tyre. :)

4. How much should I budget for my alarm? Is a ~$1000 Viper alarm going to be sufficent?
Honestly, you don't need to spend up to $1000 for a 'good' alarm. You are mainly paying that kind of money for the gadgety features such as: lcd pager, turbo timer, remote engine start etc. If you don't need or want those features, an alarm fully installed for $500 can be more than efficient.

5. Is a decent sound system a waste of money/power? Couple 12's in the back, Alpine 9831, awesome splits at the front? I mean, the car doesn't vibrate like a tin can does it?
If you find music as a necessity, why not spend a bit of money. You will be in your car pretty often throughout the week so why not spend some money on the system. Dunno if you need up to two 12" subs in a Type R. A single 12" will be more than sufficient as the Type R's are a 'liftback' and having a 12" will be a lot louder than having a 12" in any sedan such as your Falcon.

I have my DC2R for few weeks now and I am more than happy with the car, it is just too much fun to drive, I have exhaust with 4-1 headers ao it makes very nice sound (simular to wrx), didn't get pulled over by cops (yet).
Fuel should be better when I settle down little bit:) (I am over 6000rpm most of the time at the moment but that should last for few more weeks).
Performace wise it's great, goes very good and so far is top speed was pushed to 225km/h, which is my personal best:)
Sound system, best one is to just go over 6000rpm, heaven for your ears:)

i had 2 x 12" sub in the boot. it was pretty mad fun until someone got in and stole them.... *faggots.....

i can get about 400+km outta a 50L tank with a few occasional vtec-ing. i drive my type r everywhere... my clutch is nearly dead... so its a bit tiring if you get stuck in traffic.

i've got a vision n1 exhaust, 6000K hids and haven't really got any attention. even in rbts, i get nothing more than a straw for a souveneir.

I'd say every type-r out there has been put through its paces,
a person not willing to push the car at high rpm wouldnt really be interested in buying one.

But thier built strong, and it wouldnt be so rev-happy if honda didnt want it to be pushed.

But yes, 'thrashed' isnt good :)

there are two on carsales.com.au, that I would consider getting, and one is yellow with yellow recaros, has a claimed 35000 kms, seems a bit low, but if its true would be a great buy at 25K, not in sydney though.

the type r is a great car i got mine over a wrx ... i never thought of buying one till the sales man made me drive it... but anyway back on topic
i have got a fair stereo in mine and it sounds great dvd 2 screens 3 amps bla bla bla..
as for doing things to it to compensate for stereo weight i would advise watching best motoring type r legend first.
1:- great daily driver but revs high on the highway
2:- cop attention is drver dependant..
3:- get the best tyres you can afford... you get what you pay for
4:- see reply #3
5:- in my opinion yes it is worth it

pm me if you want to buy mine lol

Thanks all, I ended up getting a 95 VTI-R. Loved it when I took it for a drive, and honestly couldnt justify the $10k extra it would have costed me to get a 01 Type R. Although I can see definately why people would chose to get the R.

I found myself a nice bargain I think, $15k for a very sexy black teg vti-r, completely stock driven by a chick! :)

1. As a daily driver, what's it like? I'm still thinking I'll buy a second car, maybe a povo oldschool corolla as my main daily driver, and use my Type R for weekend and maybe once a week to work.

As for the DC2R, I drive mine to work every day (about 30kms each way) and love it :D Its up to the individual. I thought the seats & suspension were going to be a problem but they're great! The firmness and ride height is perfect for street use IMO. For me it was the clutch and engine performance at low revs that took getting used to. Once you practice enough and can drive smoothly then its not a problem.

I'm finding it very fuel efficient too (in stock form), and it holds two mountain bikes in the back (with the seats flat) no problem. So no need for a second car at all for me!

Test drive one and you'll know straight away if the car is for you. If you get in and can't stop grinning, buy one. If you find it annoying trying to get comfortable, or find the ride too bumpy or get jerked around using the clutch, look at another car. Maybe a DC5R?

2. Police attention? Can I expect to be pulled over more? I don't mind, I'll keep my mods legal etc, but still, if I were to get pulled over twice a night that would be piss me off.

If its stock should be no problem. Cops seem to respect the car when its stock. If you have huge wheels, thumping bass, GT wing, or blue headlights then yes expect problems. The bigger problem I am having than cops is getting wankers at every set of lights trying to turn it into a race.

5. Is a decent sound system a waste of money/power? Couple 12's in the back, Alpine 9831, awesome splits at the front? I mean, the car doesn't vibrate like a tin can does it? (Obviously no osund deadening cos I wanna save weight..)

With the sound deadening gone, the engine and road noise are pretty loud. In the city driving slowly or in a parked car, thats the only two times you can appreciate a decent radio. Revving the engine out frequently (which you need to do if you arent driving like a granny to work every day) or highway driving (4000rpm @ 115km/h!) = don't spend money on the sound system.

Sounds bad, but luckily the engine sounds awesome so I just turn the radio off when I'm going for a spirited drive.

Oh and, high mileage is not a problem if it has been serviced well and regularly. Watch out for crunching when you change gears at higher revs - means its been thrashed & could be expensive to fix that.
