View Full Version : Buying a 97 Prelude
Hey guys, i registered on here about 1/2hour ago, so am new to the site.
I'm looking to buy a 97model prelude VTI-R, 17" wheels, and lowered. Engine is standard.
Just wondering if u have any tips, or anything specific i should look out for.
Also i hear that the 97 model has minor defects compared to newer models???
How accurate is this?
Thanks for the help.

97 preludes tiptronics have weak gearboxes
apart from that its the same as the rest
altho its only got 143kw as opposed to 147 from 99 and later preludes
how much are u hoping to spend?
when it comes to preludes u should spend a bit extra and get the right 1.
Looking to spend about 20g's
Will definetly be gettin a manual aswell.
So is the 5kw increase the only difference between the 97 and 99 models?

The 5kw is gained through exaust modification, so i've been told. So if you are planning on installing a aftermarket exaust system, you should be close to equal with the series 2 model.
The changes to the 5th gen Prelude through the years are as below:
1998 Honda Prelude: New paint colors were the only change for 1998.
1999 Honda Prelude: More new colors became available, but only one interior hue: black. The Prelude's engine gained 5 horsepower, and did not require a tune-up until 100,00 miles. Remote locking now was a standard feature.
2000 Honda Prelude: Preludes entered the 2000 model year without change.
2001 Honda Prelude: Standard floormats, rear child-seat tethers, an emergency trunk release were the main changes for 2001. Prelude would not continue for 2002.

everystock honda is like that, cant feel the vtec kicking in on a stock motor. its only noticable when the intake system is modified
