View Full Version : LS Smoke Problem
Hay guys love the site. I brought my LS in April for $3000, fully stock. It has about 460,000 (that’s why it was cheap), but its on its second engine (B18A). The problem I have with it is that it blows White/blue smoke when I accelerate. People and friends say that it’s the pistons and piston rings and that its oil leaking and burning off and that’s the smoke. Would this be true? If so me and dad are going to take it apart and replace the pistons and piston rings and recondition the head at the same time. How much do you guys think pistons and piston rings cost? And where do ya think I can get type R pistons and piston rings? Would that be a good idea? I saw some on ebay once. Please Help!!!!

hey dude, congrats on the car.
smoke comming from the exhaust is often associated with oil leakage, whether it be cracked head, or anythin else, its usually fairly hard 2 diagnose without gettin in there and checkin it out. it would just mean that oil is being seeped thru in2 the combustion chamber, and is being burned off. oil is thicker than petrol, hence the thicker smoke. ide recomend u get it checked out, check if ur losing oil, and check consistancy on the dip stick.
also, the type r has a different engine than an LS, so i would assume that the pistons may b of different sizes (sum1 may want to correct me on that). also they are quite expensive to buy. u might want to check out sum after marked companies if ur determined to go that route.

you need to increase your compression ration from 9.2.1 to 11 at least. Plus with higher compression pistons you need a higher lift profile cams to work with. This will cost you around 1200(pistons), cams(800$)...and more ..valves, new ecu. With all that money. I would put back the stock parts. And work on your final diff.

your options on this will most likely be
1: engine re-build or 2: New engine!
belive me I had the same problem until the engine blew its self to bits.

do a compression and leak down test to determine ur problem, Could be a head Crack/Gasket, or could be ur rings. Instead of rebuilding ($$$ but fun & a learning experiance) U might be better off buying a good condition B16A from a wreckers, do some hagaling and get one for $700-$1000, and swap the engine. You will have more power and a vtec engine, but u will loose some torque. BUT a B16a in a LS is very fun, if u buy the engine u can can just keep it and do performance upgrades (Cams, Headwork, Intake etc etc) to it until ur old engine blows, then swap them over. LOL just a suggestion. Also if ur new to the teg/Honda world, look at the LS/Vtec head swap option as well, u can swap the b16a head onto the block of ur b18a and basically its a poor mans type r engine. eg Displacement of a b18a + vtec + light LS teggy = big smiles on ur face and unhappy looks from others in ur mirrors :D
Damn 3gs for a teggy with 460kms. should have save another 2gs and bought mine lol

im kinda haveing the same problems, i got mine for 3 completly stock but miens only done 289 on its 1st engine, how much would i be lookin at to get a rebuild + LS/vtec combination roughly?

it really depends on how you do it I suppose. A rebuild from a mechanic is costly because of the hours of work involved, but you get warranties etc when u do it. Guessing around the 2-4K mark (guessing correct me if im wrong) doing it urself is a great way to learn abour ur engine and can be quite fun/stressfull lol, but well worth it in the end. Urself ur only really paying for parts, and freinds who know what their doing which means paying for booze & pizza as well lol, prob 1-2k
A head swap, I got quoted $400-$600 for a B16a head from a honda wrecker, then prob another $400 for the kit to do it (golden eagal LS kit, included oil lines, head gasket, dowel pins)

Head would need a service and mabey $250, I would do some bottom end strengthening and some headwork while the project is on the way, ummmm ecu, machining and othe rlittle bits and peices, there is a link somewhere

i was thinkin of that option when i done my head last time (GUESS WAT... it happened again 2day!), and i just decided it simply wasnt worth it. ull need the following for an LS/VTEC
-B16a head complete, with cams - 2nd hand should be around 600 – 700$
-2nd hand A b16a2 complete distributor $600 - $800
-2nd hand 4 wire o2 sensor 100$
-VRS gasket kit for the cylinder head replacing all seals / gaskets $500
-ARP head studs $250
-Surfacing of the head / machine work / welding up oil galleries $200 - $400
-Vtec oil conversion kit $250
-ECU – obd1 about $1250
-Labor ??????
-Tuning about $650
so ide say ur better off with the following options...
rebuilding current b18a
installing b18b (DC4 GSI)
installing a b16a (VTEC y0!)
this topic has been covered extensively on the forum (search is ur friend dude :thumbsup: LoL) just depends on ur budget, and wat u want out of the car.

hey man i just had a quote done in WA for myself
my mate hooked me up wit a b18c wit box fitted (frontcut from a vtir) for $4400 which i think sounds hell cheap and alot of people ave said becareful bout it.

Looks like u are in need of a new engine, see if only u would have spent an extra 3k and u could have brought a decent LS and it would have saved u the trouble of mechanics, and all the bs involved ...and once u change an engine apparantly the car is never the same again!! [Why would u buy a car with 460,000 clicks on it 4?]

admitatly the body would b 460000 old, but with a fresh engine in there, and sum minor body work, he could have himself a vtec in a da9 for the same price as a normal ls with average kms

He must loved the shape of LS just like others. 4400$ fitted for b18c is a bargain that will never happen in sydney. UNLESS we doing it ouself...

Because the body is in mint cond. and the tranmission is perfect and it was well looked after. I think its the best bargain i have ever got. Just need new piston rings and its good as new.

not bad idea but wouldn't you have to upgrade the brakes to get it engineered? 1834cc to 1995ccs woudl make a diference in this area when it comes time to geting the car on the road.....

How much and where from? and is it worth the investment. Cause my stock air filter and the plastic pipe is stuffed.

Yeah the engine is finished. It cost $1850. And everything has been done to it. Including over sized piston and piston rings. No smoke and a big difference in its acceleration and pick up. Its hell!!!!! All i need now is performance mods ;). Any ideas??? Keep in mind its auto.

ouch dude! u paid 1850? jesus.. u could have reconditioned the dam thing at good performance (ffld) for about 1200

i dunno..if ur engine have done so much...maybe its time to change...just the fact that after u fix this other things mite pop up....
i would just trade this and get another engine like LO N SXC did...he got a gsi engine in there now...pretty gd...sound like a vtec ( althought its not ) still have lots of guts...not much slower than b16a

his car is auto but mines manual.. my d16a8 stuffd up on me the crank was chewd out completly so i decided to get a new engine put in for about 2g's i gota zc engine ( brake pads, servcing,cv boot) included tho

i got the same problem with my LS, but it only blows smoke when i flat stick it.. it also happens sometimes at start up, but it isnt smoke and isnt oil, its more like watery carbon residue or something like that.. but that only happens once every now and then.. anyone got any ideas?

I had the same problem too. Could be unburnt fuel, which may have something to do with a sensor, or spark plugs. But yeah my old teg had a leaking headgasket too which also lead to smoke at high rpms and it not pulling as hard as it normally would.

I've something similar hapen just recently but I think its because the car has been siting outside for quite a while, I gave the car a wash and when I went to reverse a cloud of smoke came out! must have been all the spider webs or something? lol
Yeah i have learn my lesson since then. After the engine was good and fixed up the gearbox ****ed up. It was 1800 for a new auto one. Next time i will buy a better engine(e.g B18C) and manual it. Manual are better ay, more control. But its all good now. Performance is so much better. Takes off faster now then it did before, and when ya put your foot too the floor it changes gears at 6000 revs. It may not take off fast but i will catch ya eventually.lol
