What do you need to fit an aftermarket headunit (with the standard ISO side clips) into the Civic dash (with rear flange mounting for stock headunit)?

Can you buy an adapter bracket?

All you need is the manufacturer specific mounting cage for your brand of Head Unit and the HU's power/speakers wiring loom. Some solder, tape and a pair or wire strippers would be handy too and for ultimate ease of installation, you can grab an adaptor from Repco to allow you to leave the stock loom plug for the OEM radio in the dash so you can just plug it back in later if you sell your ride.

actually for the ek the the stock headunit is a bit wider then normal din size, so you need something to
1. make the aftermarket hu flush with the rest of the dash
2. fill in the spaces

even on installdr.com from their pdf to install a hu into the factory position of the ek

This vehicle requires the use of a specialty radio installation kit designed
specifically for 1996 to 1998 Honda Civics. The Honda radio is designed with
an extended face panel so that the face of the radio sits flush with the rest of
the dash surrounding the radio. However, the rectangular opening in the dash the new
radio will slide into is approximately 1 inch behind the front panel of the Honda radio. When
installing a new radio, the face of the new radio will not align flush with the rest of the dash
because of this 1 inch difference in depth. The specialty radio installation kit is designed to
move the radio out so that it aligns with the rest of the dash surrounding the radio as well
as covering the small gaps on each side of the new radio.

a friend in the US used a metra dash kit to sit his alpine hu flush with the dash,

NB: i'm not sure if this is the actual one he used

this was one of the reasons i installed my hu in front of the shifter... i didn't know where to get the adapter bracket from.

edit:
this is probably the one he used

how hard would it be to install a doble din unit such as the followwing:

its actually the jdm sat nav.... so im guessin parts can be bought from jdm places...
but how bout a normal double din unit? the air con controls need to be removed?

Double din swaps require ALL of the blower boxes and vents from a 99-00 with climate control.

Climate control was never sold in Australia so it requires you to either get parts from Japan or the US.

Cliff notes: Not worth it

You’re talking about US dashes. We don't have the pocket (there’s a clock there instead)
You don’t need any conversion kit aftermarket radio fit perfectly

You only need a conversion kit if your dash looks like this

Last time I checked everyone’s dash looked like this

Yeah the Ek is as simple to remove as a few screws on the ashtray panel. then you have to undo 1 screw from under the stock radio. the one i had in mine was a kenwood std 1 din.

What i want to know is if there is some way of either changing the damn clock or putting something there instead. The idea of having a clock on the dash and also one right next to it in the stereo is kinda pointless.

Looking at that US pic one of them pocket things may work but can you get them over here?

Anyone have any ideas?

P.S. sorry for hijacking thread but kinda on point.

Thanks to those that replied.

I have got the new whiz-bang headunit installed and cranking.
It is a great improvement over the stock unit.

I couldn't find a harness adapter, so I just spliced into the existing loom (ghetto but it worked and is reversible)
I may build a rear stay bracket to hold up the rear of the radio if it wobbles about a bit - but for now it is sweet

I'd also like to say thanks to Stratfield car radios at Artarmon who gave me a spare install bracket they had lying around for free.
