View Full Version : Changing cams, need standalone ECU?

I have an e-manage on my car, and never really wanted to use a standalone computer for it,
But I was wondering, if I put cams, that would mean my peak power will be at higher revs, quite likely at higher revs than the rev cut set on the standard computer?
Am I right, or will mild cams just improve power and make peak power before rev cut?

E-manage can not extend the maximum RPM point of your car above your standard rev limit, so if the cams have a different power-band which require the engine to turn harder you most certainly will need to look for another solution to be able to tune the car correctly. Also upgrade your valve springs whilst your at it, without upgrading key components like your valve springs you wouldn’t want be reving your engine much harder, or use a longer duration cam.

How "wild" can a cam be before needing a standalone ECU? As I already have an e-manage...
And, if other mods are done to get air in/out quicker, will this lower the VTEC engangement time?
ie, with bigger plenum, TB, intake manifold, ported heads, extractors, exhaust etc, because more air goes in, would the efficiency of the 2nd lobe start from lower revs?
