View Full Version : has anyone ever bypassed

the vtec pressure valve on a B series engine? I'm continually throwing code 22 and quite sick of vtec not working.
yes, i changed oil.. and i put in enough of it
i cleaned that mesh thing
and reset the ecu
I know the valve is like a safety device, which can also be disabled in hondata?? do i really need this valve? I searched here there and everywhere and i get a largely mixed response.
anyone done this, or recomend y i shouldn't do it?
regards
Lloyd

have you measured your oil pressure?
that is what the sensor is measuring, and it wont let you go into VTEC because it thinks your oil pressure is too low.
have you replaced the sensor with one from someone elses car that works??

yes I have bypass it
two ways
1 in the ecu, I can do this for you.
2 use a relay to do this for your.
I feal the VPS is a waist of time, 96 on ( OBDII ) cars do not have this pressure switch.

If you are 100% shure you have good pressure bypass it
so you idther have a faulty sensor or running low pressure and that one would be a problem

It can be disabled in the ECU.
If you want, I can do this for you, just shoot me an email.

Personally I wouldn’t be looking at band-aiding the solution buy turning off the error in the ECU, the error is there for a reason, either you have low oil pressure, which could be a sign of excess bearing wear in the bottom end, or semi faulty oil pump, blocked oil pickup, or one of many oil related problems, or it could be the simple fact the pressure valve might just be faulty, or your standard ECU might have blown components on it, or even a simple wiring issue.
Sure Hondata would fix that error and disable the function, we do this for full blown Race engines that don’t run these switches and always have vtec activated, but for a street car this valve works as a protection option for your engine. I would much rather see you spend time and money diagnosing the problem, and physical replacing the switch or finding out why you have low oil pressure than using Hondata to remove the error.

I actually agree with James to be honest

would a leakdown test help in diagnosing this problem? thanks for the advice guys, much appreciated

no, you need to test your oil pressure with an oil pressure gauge across your RPM range...
with engine at normal operaating temp, you need about ~10psi at idle and minimum ~50psi at 3000rpm ...
and over ~60psi above 5000rpm...

you might also need to test you VTEC oil pressure switch and VTEC solenoid too...

thanks tinkerbell
do u know any sites with a DIY for this kinda thing.... or just take it to a mechanic?

well you need an oil pressure gauge and a few other things,
so might be cheaper to get a mechanic to do it...

The other thing i forgot to ask was, is this a difficult job for a mechanic? or is it on par with doing a compression test?

well, the hardest part is hooking up the gauge,
the most obvious place to attach it is to the place where the normal oil pressure switch is on the back of the block under the intake manifold, this easy to access on a hoist...

i had the same prob but i fixed it..
i just thrashed my car up and down my street for a bit and now it doesnt come on any more.

hmmm, EGB16A, i would not recommend DjRob's method of "troubleshooting"...

EGB16A:
did you end up fixing it? If so how did u do it?

not fixed yet, i check oil again, ad it was a little low. I'm worried about the amount of oil i am consuming. I am running shell synthetic (5w-30 from memory) if this makes a difference. I checked the filter underneath the solenoid, which may apear to need replacing... could this be the root of all evil? I took the plug of the oil switch, and check the terminals were ok... which they were. I check the ecu for anything broken, and everything seemed fine. All pins were firmly in the connector.
I'm so thinking of rebuilding!!

my cars giving me problems. I cant stop the leak from the vtec section. i even took out the o ring and cleaned out the mesh and used silicon to try and stop the slow leak. Does ur car start to cut off and stumble or the engine light just come on and no vtec?

silicon isn't the answer man :D My car seems to run fine, just no vtec. REALLY annoying :thumbdwn:

Yeah man im sick of it im gonna get everything fixed and sell my car

silicone will cause more damage. If yor O2 sensor gets a wif of it, it will be the end of that.

ur very correct mate... man why do all ppl think silicon is the answer for everything... hahaha... under heat, pressure and oil it tends to deform in shape and peel off anywayz... should never use it as a replacement for a seal..
anywayz.. back to ur prob with the vtec... i had an EG6 before and i had a check light too in the dash.. used the launch tool to diagnostic it and it told me i had a prob with the vtec solenoid and the dizzy... the vtec solenoids on the earlier b-series are not that good but they dun stuff up that much.. and yes the mesh ur talking about gets a bit grubby so u need to clean it.. the light use to come on every now and then then it just stayed on.. no vtec either coz when ur ecu receives error msgs it will disable vtec and go into safe mode so u dun ruin the engine.. i checked the solenoid by putting a good one on.. no change.. so i knew it obviously had to be the dizzy.."again"..
check ur dizzy coz i went thru 3 dizzy's on my EG6... they are very poorly made and heat really stuffs them up... wat James said is very correct that u should not be bypassing the oil pressure sensor but trying to actually find the cause of the problem..
anywayz.. when i o/h my dizzy and put a new transistor card in it all the check lights went away... i ultrasonic-ed the injectors as well then the car was like brand new... soo much gunk in the injectors coz the timing gets retarded also when its in safe mode... heaps of soot due to unburnt fuel..
so check all the simple things first before u start goin into it too much.. just do a quick check of the dizzy.. open the cap and take the rotor button off and check inside to see that the wires are still good and have insulation on them.. coz when the oil seal goes the oil just starts eating up the wire insulation which can give u error msgs as the wires are earthing out the dizzy signal..
hope all that crap i just wrote helps.. in some way... if in doubt just take it to a mechanic..
