Does anyone know if power steering can be disabled? If so, how?

To be more specific, its a CD accord.

Thanx

You can't simply disable it by unplugging it or anything coz its not designed to handle the stresses of turning without power assistance. It would also be much much heavier than a non power type because the gearing would be different.. You would have to replace your steering rack with a non-power type unit. Not sure if they made one for a CD Accord though so it would have to be a custom job then or adapted from another model.

I think steering wheel with smaller diameter would make it a little firmer.

Captiva_blue: Do you know how much roughly it'd cost?
I think when I get my second car, I would want that to be done.

is there a fuse for it?, maybe disconnecting the power supply?

Like I said, you cannot simply 'switch it off,' it would be dangerous to do so. It is neccessary to change the equipment to something suited to non power operation.

No idea how much it would cost, it would depend on whether you could source a non power rack for your specific model or if you would have to get the original one customised or adapt another model's rack... Talk to EG5, I believe he has a non power rack on his Civic..

Some late model cars have electric stearing racks there would be some kind of function you could maybe unplug but im shure you would damage the rack completely if you where to d/c it and it was electric
most P/S systems run of a pump and its hydrulic
