Are there any symptoms that tell you your timing belt needs to be changed ?
Besides from the obvious 100,000kms.
I'm coming close to the kms, but short on cash, just wondering if I can put off changing the belt til 110 - 120. What happens if you dont' change the timing belt ?

i'd be changing it when it's due mate, if it snaps you'll be up for a whole lot more money (when they snap, they typically at the very minimum bend valves...)

Yea that's pretty scary.
Should I stick with OEM one or are the aftermarket ones better ?

duuuuuuuuu.....DUuuuuuuuuuuu...DUuuuuuuuuuu *SNAP!* clank clank clank clank CLANK CLANK CLANK CLANK *pop!* *Seize!* *stop!*

You get the idea....the timing belt controls the timing of the camshafts in proportion to spark , valves, stroke etc etc.
If it should snap during driving....basically the valves will float and fly down into the combustion chamber while the pistons are coming up !( compressing!) Resulting in bent valves...stuffed pistons or god knows what($$$$$$$) .

Its preventative maintenence - TIMING belt replacement should always be done at the latest on the due time. Its not like oil or winshield washer fluid...you cant afford to let this slip by at all.

And - OEM always is best :)

I just had mine done with a new water pump which cost $470, i think the timing belt alone is around the $200 mark with labour.

i cant remember what i paid for the timing belt alone, but it was no where near $200

Did you put the timing belt on yourself? they are pretty cheap to buy but putting them in costs a bit in labour.

I just called up Honda, the actual timing belt itself is $70 roughly, but to drop it off and drive away costs $420 inc GST.

nah i didnt do it myself, it was still about $130 or so if i remember right

I read that wrong anyway, i thought he said the belt itself was $200 plus labour. Around $200 all up isnt too bad

Honda charged my brother around the $300 mark, but his had already snapped so he had it towed there (he was lucky, he only had 2 bent valves and no piston damage because he wasnt revving hard when it happened) ;)

I have a Honda Accord 1993 EXI which had its last service at 170.000k. It has done 2000k since and this morning I noticed that there was oil in two of the spark plug chambers?? Is this common...or what should I do?

Does anyone know which honda engines (all engines for that matter) are "interference" type and which are not? From what I've read, most if not all Honda motors are "interference" type which means valves will clash with pistons if a timing belt breaks. cheers

I purchase Gates Timing belt think it was $100, they have a long life and is alot stronger and thicker material. Is guratee to run 120,000kms before change.

From past experiences

ED Civic D15 is free running ( live to see another day )

88 Lude B20 engine is an interference fit. ( head off job )

most twin cam engines are not forgiving
but I have fixed the following with incorect valve timing with no bent valves, timming was 2 to 4 teeth out

89 Ledgend
86 Integra
88 Lude,
94 Ledgend

dont know how far they can go out before they bend valves, most of the time it 4 or so teeth max, but I only have seen the D15 civics snap belts and survive, 88-91 Ludes are the worst, wont take much at all.
