Hey guyz...
Its probably just wear and tear but ill blame it on me friend anyway..

i am finding it very difficult to get into 4th gear..
well and reverse, but all hondas ive been in tend to crunch the reverse gear...
even after tryin everything..

but 4th gear is different.. always used in continuous drivin i need it!!
well i can get in.. sometimes its fine.. it can then crunch.. or sometimes doesnt go in at all..
ive had a few opinions on it already and havent been using the gear.. going 1 2 3 and then to 5.. is it the gear synchros?? whole box??
ive heard its very expensive to fix and im worried..

i know im short but i can still reach the thing.. :p but other people have tried.. there is a damn problem!! what should i do?? or anyone with the same experiences??

the way i stop crunching reverse is stopping, then put it into first and back into reverse. normally it doesnt crunch

sounds like your synchros worn and posibly bent shift fork/s

before you go spending heeps of moneies try new oil
get a better quality oil?
if it on it way out might as well milk it
I got red line oil and that got rid of my crunch

Sounds very much like a synchro problem, as others have pointed out. Might want to trot down and see Rob/Peter at Hanny's for a look see and a quote for synchro replacement. If you're flush with leftover Chrissy cash, perhaps a lightened fly and lower FD might be on the cards too ;)

i guess ill just go see me mechanic...
and depending on the price... i just might milk it with the oil change for now..
and try that first and then reverse thing..

if it is on its way out...
how long do i have before something shiets itself?
or what starts happening so i know..

and thanks again guys for the input..

when ur drivin when you gear up normally is ok..
as then slam it into nutral then clutch then select the gear (4th) if u got issues of it goin in its on its last few legs

I have the same problem, and Yes its 1000% the syncros, I've had this problem for over a yr now, so don't worry too much it shall live just that little bit longer, I have also tried the Oil thing and I have also pumped my gearbox fluid with additives and crap, makes a slight difference but still crunches.

I have been iven opinions on this from mechanics and people I used to work with back when I was a mechanic, they most thinck that it can be the clutch, which in my case is prety worn, how worn I don't know but the pedal for the clutch sits much higher than the brake pedal.

The other opinion has been to get the gearbox re conditioned or just buy the new syncro, but thanks to Honda they only sold in pairs 1-2 and 3-4 so you can't just buy 4th gear sync without having to buy 3rd.

temporary solution that I can give you and is what I do in my car is to, when going from 3rd to 4th press on the clutch pop it out of third into neoutral and depress the clutch soon after press the clutch in again and pop it into 4th then depress the clutch, you will notice that it wont crunch or not as bad, thats becouse you're giving the syncros time to do what the're made for, syncronising the gears in between shift.

Try it! this is what I do and it works fine, its just a bit of a work out on your left leg, and a bit anoying when you're racing or want to change gears fast, but like I said its a temporary thing.

Good luck and let us know how you go.

Cheers!

I agree with LO_N_SXC.....but give it a bit of a rev while in neutral (i.e. double clutching). Just in case u dont know what i mean:

While ur in 3rd:
1. Clutch in
2. Enter neutral
3. Release clutch
4. Rev (how much depending on ur speed)
5. Clutch in
then enter 4th gear normally

I used to have a similar problem but not as bad. Definately synchros starting to weat out - new oil fixed it right up. Dont go cheap on the oil tho, as generic brands can actually make it worse. Go either redline or Honda. Hanny's do the oil change pretty cheap ($30-40 from what i recall??)

And synchros are pretty pricey too. I was looking at changing em and came across 2 problems:
1. they're $500 per synchro pair supplied only
2. Honda dont stock them in Australia for our gearboxes and need a couple months to get in(well, thats what Peter from hanny's says)

Anyways...good luck with the box mate...

Have you got a short shifter?, in the odd occasion alignment with a short shifter can cause improper operation of your shift linkage.

short shifter isnt in it at the moment...
i dunno if its just a tempramental thing but its working fine now!!

both my 4th gear and reverse are sliding in properly without a crunch..
ill still do the oil change but ill let the synchros go for now..
if it does come back ill also try the clutchin technique..

thanks for the input boyz... :)
