View Full Version : Which piggyback setup would be better?
I'm currently in the process of deciding whether which piggy back ecu's
would be better in terms or power and overall performance..
Would my EG6 be better off with:
A) VAFC II, + ITC or B) E-Manage
I've been getting mixed feedback from all sorts and want to know from those
who have installed such on their car.. pref civic owners with b16 series..
Obviously in order to get the best performance you'll be needing quite
extensive mods which is in order as well... so shoot me your thoughts pls..

If you get the VAFCII have a look at the wiring harness adaptor they sell aswell. I saves you having to hack in to your original harness and will only take you about 2 minutes to install the whole unit.

If u have quite extensive mods that you are planning on doing, a piggy back is jst not worth it.
you will spend 600 odd on the piggy back, then start doing ya mods and realise that you need a standalone system. your better off saving your 600 bucks n putting it towards a hondata or haltec or something. it will be more benficial in the long run.
Piggy backs are very limitied in what they can do, and to get the most out of your mods a standalon computer will be required. its a much better option IMO and offers so much more in terms of tuning options, features and power out put.
Try talking to a few tuners about this bro, they can give u the best info, i have never used or had a moded computer in any of my cars i have jst done a lot of reading and searching of features etc.
Good luck with your decision.

no worries mate, good luck with ya decision.
but consult a tuner about ya whole set up n future plans, that way they can advise you in which direction to go with part selections and u might be able to either save some more money or get an overall better set up than what u first decided on.

i have installed a VAFC on my car, it has a stockish B20VTEC engine.
it puts out 120kW at the wheels, which is about 3kW less than my last B20VTEC put out which was also tuned with VAFC.
the the tuning is just for the fueling, so it is limited to correctign the air/fuel ratio, and does not allow optimisation of the ignition timing.
the reason i chose VAFC? well it was only $200ish and would get the engine running better than nothing.
so i opted for something rather than nothing, as i still cannot afford a proper EMS...
overall performance is OK, but i know (can feel) that it would be better with an actual programable EMS...
FWIW - i ran 13.72 @101mph with a VAFC tuned B20VTEC LS Integra

im not experienced in this area but if you were going to buy the things new a piggyback would be around 500ish + install if you dont DIY and a decent full computer would be around the 1000 mark ie. Apexi Power FC etc. Then tuning would be necessary at roughly say 400ish. The extra options the standalone would have would optimise whatever mods you have done to your car as compared to a piggyback. This would mean better drivability, more control over the tuning of th engine and in most cases pretty good datalogging options as well.
a good example is if you install lumpier cams on your b16, you would most likely have to raise the rev limiter to get the full potential out of this mod otherwise you are wasting your money. E-manage and vafc dont allow this whereas any decent replacement ecu will. An exception to this rule is the hondata which is in effect a piggyback but with a shitload of options. But then again look again at the options, hondata has to be tuned by a hondata tuner. Whereas microtech, haltech, powerfc, motec(now we are getting into the big $$) can be tuned by anyone with the right equipment that you trust with your car obviously, even if you are ballsy enough to try and tune it yourself you have that option as well, although i wouldnt do it.
i would weigh up the pros and cons of getting the ones you are thinking about and then make an educated decision based on what suits you best and what you are planning for your b16 in the future..
An emanage can do alot more then a vafc. easier to tune too. Not much support out there for ur Jazz though, so a piggyback might be the only way to go.
