Like every year, the first day of December is the moment when the FIA announces the entry list for the Formula One World Championship of the upcoming season.

Ten teams will compete in the 2006 championship, which confirms that the Super Aguri F1 Team will not be part of this elite group, at least not for next season.

Only three spots remain unconfirmed in the driver selections: two at Toro Rosso and one at Red Bull Racing. It seems very likely that Christian Klien will remain at Red Bull while Vitantonio Liuzzi and Scott Speed should drive for Toro Rosso.

2006 Formula One Championship entry list
1. Fernando Alonso (E) - Renault F1 Team
2. Giancarlo Fisichella (I) - Renault F1 Team
3. Kimi Raikkonen (FIN) - McLaren Mercedes

Super Aguri team a non-starter for 2006

Friday Dec 2 06:12 AEDT
Japan's planned Super Aguri Formula One team will not take part in next season's championship, the governing FIA said.

An official list of entrants had just 10 teams, the same number as this year.

"We have notified the team that their application has been refused," said a spokesman for the International Automobile Federation.

Super Aguri, run by former Formula One racer Aguri Suzuki, had hoped to enter the championship with Honda engines and technical support.

They had been talking to former Minardi owner Paul Stoddart about buying four-year-old Arrows cars due to problems in overcoming the regulations preventing teams from using cars designed and built by existing entrants.

While no reason was given for the FIA's rejection, new applicants to the championship must pay a $US48 million ($A65.15 million) bond before they can be accepted and sources suggested that had not been forthcoming.

Their omission from the official entry list dashed the immediate hopes of Takuma Sato, dropped by Honda-owned BAR at the end of this season, of being on the starting grid next year as well as Briton Anthony Davidson. It also left Japan without a grand prix driver.
However a late entry remained a possibility, albeit unlikely, if the team can secure the unanimous agreement of all the other entrants before the first race of the season in Bahrain on March 12.

The official list, headed by champions Renault who retain their Mild Seven tobacco backing, also confirmed that Portugal's Tiago Monteiro would take the second seat at the new Midland team replacing Jordan.

McLaren, runners-up in the 2005 championship despite winning more races than Renault, were listed without a title sponsor following the departure of cigarette brand West.

BAR's name changes to Lucky Strike Honda Racing F1 team following Honda's decision to buy out founders British American Tobacco.

No drivers were listed for Scuderia Toro Rosso, who replace stragglers Minardi after that Italy-based team was bought out by Red Bull and renamed.

American Scott Speed is likely to be one of them, becoming his country's first Formula One racer since Michael Andretti left McLaren in 1993, alongside either Austrian Christian Klien or Italian Vitantonio Liuzzi.

Either Liuzzi or Klien will go to Red Bull's main Ferrari-powered team.

The other vacant slot on the list was at the new BMW team but that was filled earlier when they confirmed that Canadian former champion Jacques Villeneuve would be seeing out his Sauber contract.

BMW announced in June that they were buying Sauber to enter their own team after six years as engine partners to former champions Williams.

Super Aguri still has some problems to overcome
Super Aguri is pressing on with its new Formula One programme despite not being listed on the official FIA entry list issued earlier this month.

Despite missing the deadline in which to lodge the $48 million dollar bond as required, the team still hopes to make the field in Bahrain in March and is confident that the existing ten teams will give the approval – now required - for the addition of the team.

Martin Whitmarsh told the Reuters news agency that McLaren Mercedes has written to Super Aguri stating that they would support its entry but only did so at the request of Honda who are set to supply the team with engines. "My understanding is that at least Midland have dug in," Whitmarsh said. "If you are a turkey, you don't vote for Christmas and they haven't agreed."

Toyota has confirmed that it is backing the new team and would not stand in the way of any new entry into the series and has made its position clear to Midland who the Toyota powerplant.

The top ten teams in the championship are eligible to TV, but even the addition of Super Aguri would not effect things in the short-term anyway as the new team would not be entitled to revenues for the first two years anyway.

Should the team get the green light for 2006, Takuma Sato is expected to drive for the team with the backing from Fuji TV and other Japanese sponsors.

Suzuki getting closer to his goal

Super Aguri F1 Limited is delighted to announce that its late entry application to participate in the 2006 FIA Formula One World Championship has been accepted by all 10 of the current F1 teams.

Super Aguri F1 Limited will now apply to the FIA to complete its Championship entry application.

The Japanese-owned team has been working around the clock to ensure it makes the Bahrain Grand Prix deadline. It will conduct operations from its base at the Leafield Technical Centre in Oxfordshire, UK, in conjunction with the A.Company Inc. head office situated in Tokyo, Japan.

The team has been intensively recruiting personnel for every department to enable it to be ready in time to join the F1 fraternity at the first race of the season in March.

Aguri Suzuki, Team Principal, Super Aguri F1 Limited
“I am very happy to be able to announce that all 10 F1 teams have approved our late entry to the Formula One World Championship today. I would like to thank all of the teams for approving our late entry and assure them that the Super Aguri F1 team will cooperate and do our best to reach your expectations. We appreciate your support and we will not let you down.”

Daniel Audetto, Managing Director, Super Aguri F1 Limited
“I am very proud to be part of the new Super Aguri F1 team. We are looking forward to joining the F1 grid for 2006 in Bahrain and to becoming increasingly competitive as the season progresses. Of course we do not expect to be on the pace straight away; we will use the first GP’s to train the team before our definitive car reaches the track.”

Sato could well have a Japanese team-mate
Super Aguri F1 is confident that they will make the opening bell for the 2006 season in Bahrain in March and it sis widely accepted that former BAR Honda racer Takuma Sato will line up for the new squad.

The identity of his team-mate is not known however with initial speculation suggesting that long-time BAR Honda test driver Anthony Davidson could land the role.

Now however, Formula Nippon racer Yuji Ide has moved into the frame according to Autosport to make it an all-Japanese line-up in the team. Ide enjoys backing from Japanese firm Mobilecast.

Aguri Suzuki
Japan's Super Aguri team was given the green light on Thursday to take their place on the grid in this year's Formula One world championship, the sport's governing body FIA said.

"Having received the necessary financial guarantees and taken into account unanimous agreement of the other competing teams, the FIA has accepted the late entry of the Super Aguri F1 Team to the 2006 FIA Formula One World Championship."

Super Aguri becomes the 11th team lined up for the 2006 championship which gets under way in Bahrain on March 12.

The team had said in December that they had secured the agreement of the other ten teams in the championship to go forward with their application. A spokesman for Super Aguri told AFP on Thursday that the driver line-up will be announced soon.

Suzuki announced three weeks ago that his team would use engines supplied by Honda Motor and will be based in Langley in Oxfordshire in Britain and use the factory of disbanded F1 team Arrows.

Japanese driver Takuma Sato, dropped by BAR-Honda last season, is tipped to fill one of the seats.
