I've been doing a bit of digging around today and I found this interesting little article at http://www.sca40.com/intake/
Basically the guy has done a bit of logical thinking, compared dyno stats, and concluded that as fork out $$$ for an SRI, you're just as well fitting a pod filter to the standard pipe:

A lot of people don't like SRIs because they tend to suck in hot air from the engine bay -- but if you were to rig up an air duct from the front bumper that fed air to the pod filter, you might have one of the cheapest DIY air intakes that would probably be quite an effective mod.
Incidentally, I used to think that the chances of anybody really damaging their engine through water up a CAI was next to impossible (unless you drove through a creek) -- until I read this thread:

hmm
SRI in that thread is good innovation, but it looks shite. lol
this is just me but i would get the INJEN/K&N typhoon CAI over just a pod.
wank factor :D

There was a big discussion about it all (for those that want to read more) at:

I've posted this more for people who are more into dollars for results than they are concerned about under-bonnet cosmetics. Personally, I don't care much about what things look like under my bonnet, same as I don't personally care about how "pretty" a set of headers might be so long as they serve their function properly... That's not to say that I don't appreciate well made things!
It's more that if you're not concerned about appearance and you have a limited budget, why spend $300 when you can get the same performance result for $100?

It is an excellent design for short bursts like 1/4 mile - even better than CAI - but otherwise it isn't good at all. Air duct or no air duct - that design is eventually going to suck in hot air from the engine bay. Even running the Euro engine for only 15 minutes I find everything is VERY hot in the entire engine bay. The air needs to come from an area away from the engine bay IMO. What is the point of a few great bursts in power when the engine bay is not hot - but then less power for the rest of the trip?

Yeah, you might need a (*gasp*) bonnet scoop or vent for this to really work...
Just chucking ideas around...
(I still don't have a Euro yet so I don't really know what everything's like under the bonnet -- I've just been lurking for the last year finding out everything about them -- but I'm going shopping shortly!)

i've seen that article before too. it makes some good points but at the end of the day (like yfin said) having the setup exactly like that will result in poorer performance the longer the driving period is.
What i think would be really effective however would be to custom make some sort of thick plastic or rubber shield around such a pod filter, compeltely sealing it and then having a healthy size ducting directing cold air from the fog light opening to the filter. i don' think this would be too hard and will probably be the design i have a crack at.
i've decided the icebox + pod filter idea wouldn't be the best becaust of the limited amount of cold air that can be fed into the box. Imagine a custom made cavity about twice the size jam packed full of cold air with a oversized podfilter taking in as much as it needs - close to the perfect design i think?
