i wanna get a VDO sat nav for my car. I am waiting on a double din tv (kenwood one) and i wanna get the sat nav to hook up to it but after i looked at the price i am having second thoughts. They want 2500 for the sat nav computer without the crappy vdo screen and after i heard that i almost fell over. Is there anywhere that sells the vdo system for cheaper. Any recommendations or anyone that might be selling the current model sat nav second hand. I was going to get it coz i do heaps of driving for work but for 2500 i can get a street directory every week for the rest of my life.
thanks guys

The VDO isn't cheap. They are good units but don't expect to pay anything less than $2000.

Why not look at a handheld/portable satnav system like the navman or tomtom? They are a lot less.

I think I seen a Navman for about $700 or so at DickSmith small and portable one....

Yups, better choice right there. There's plenty on the market. Portable navigation systems are alot more convenient and practical. If you have more than one car, you can easily take it from one to the other and if you goto somewhere you don't know, for instance, Perth, you could take it with you when you walk around the city and don't want to get lost.
I also have an indash DVD/TV screen and thought about navigation. I'd rather buy the portable devices as it is the more practical choice.

you will find an authorised VDO agent who sells VDO products. just click on your state on the top right hand corner where you see the map or Aust...

portable is the way to go... and the convenience is also there..
and if ur using it for work... i assume you would be able to claim the tax benefits..
go to navman.com
icn320 start at $468 etc...
thats all you need unless your after big screen touch and the other extras that dont make it work any better... this one has voice with detailed maps...
tom tom isnt to bad aswell.. both very good reputations..

I prefer portable too but if you really need the VDO one, I have seen them go for under 2k on ebay. Not sure if its the latest maps or not though.

if price is your main requirement - then mobile (navman) is your solution
the icn520 and 635 are a better unit than the cheapie one - just depends on what sort of features you want
if you must have the vdo (which are a great unit) getting one for $2500 sounds about right (from memory retail is about $3000 without screen but with the "other-brand" screen adaptor) you may be able to find one secondhand though ... btw the later vdo ms5400 models have a faster processor than earlier models (they work quicker) .....
either way get some form of nav system - they are worth the money
just my 2 cents worth :)
