just a little rundown if anyone is interested in removing there sound deadening material.

was a pretty tedious project but i chose the hard way. easiest way is with dry ice and chip it off, but i chose to melt it all off with a heat gun and scratch the crap out of the floor.

finished project came up ok. not as good as id like it, but good enough to put my feet on.

here is how it started:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/JPEF8/DSC04722.jpg

with a scraper and a heat gun and patience this is the resuly. it doesnt look this bad using the dry ice method. dry ice takes it off in big chunks rather then small hot fkn balls of tar which continuely stick and burn your fingers :o

at this point in time, i regret what i had done cause it looked so bad:

wax & grease removed alot more then i expected, so with lots of rags and a sponge, soak up as much of it as you can. here is the difference:
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/JPEF8/DSC04856.jpg

once all is off, give the floor a light sand and prepare it for primer. i didnt spend too much time on this, but its up to you on how far you want to take it:
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/JPEF8/DSC04857.jpg

the primer stage was pretty straight forward. i applied 2-3 coats cause its going to withstand a fair bit of wear in the future, so make it thick. i used an etch primer because it sticks alot better to metal and raw surfaces:
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/JPEF8/DSC04858.jpg
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/JPEF8/DSC04859.jpg

Paint bit was pretty straight forward. being white, it covered up alot of my fukups. i applied 4 even coats of it. just make sure the surface is completely clean before you paint. and dont paint things that need to be colour coded. eg-wires!
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/JPEF8/DSC04863.jpg
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/JPEF8/DSC04864.jpg
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/JPEF8/DSC04862.jpg

i should have taken the time to paint the rest of it, because i mixed the paint based on the exterior colour, so the parts i havent sprayed inside are more of an off white, but i will be doing this in the future.

i hope this was of some help to people wanting to do this
cheers

Nice i am too thinking of doing this to my car but where can i get dry ice from?? and do you just sit the ice on it and then chip it off with a hammer or chisel?? How legal is it to drive round the street with no carpet and just floor mats and no interior other than dash and front door trims??

cheers.

I believe you can get it from BOC Gasses. About 6 bucks a Kg

End result was good even  though you chose the hard way to do it...... how were the fumes with the heat gun? ;)

Only thing I can add is wait till winter if anyone else is planning to do it.

i guess my question is do you think the work is worth the result?

seems like a fair few hours involved there

that was only 6kg from just the sound deadening material. just think of all the other things you can take off and save more weight. it doesnt cost a cent and you can improve fuel efficiency too.

...cool, but i cant see the effort worth it...
unless your using it as a race car

LowEk

it will make your car louder inside too.

yeh i am building this car for the track, just want to have some fun with it. its going to be loud and uncomfortable but thats the way i like it.

speedcore, the fumes where pretty full on. had a decent headache for a couple of days. lol. and yeh, the cold weather will aid the dry ice method

some may say its not really worth it, but everything makes a difference. loss of weight = power. and in a slow ass honda, that matters! besides, the carpet wasnt going back in, so it may as well look nicer instead of the tar.

car will be registered as a 2 seater only. trimmings, carpet, rear seatbelts etc.. is not needed for rwc.

as long as everything from the front is still there like front door trims and dash, then its ok

LowEk

thanks thats what i thought im thinking of getting fixed seats anyway so i will have to make it a 2 seater anyway so i may as well strip the inside at the same time.

youd be best contact an engineer or someone that can definitely tell you yes or no.
i was going to get my previous complianced as a 2 seater and they still (not 100% sure) needed the front carpet... this is in NSW.

I used the dry ice method (very easy) when I did mine. And I also weighed everything I took out. I removed 4kg's worth of sound deadening from my car. There is a small amount still left, that I haven't been able to get to, but when I get my car back, i'll get it.

That was in a ED6 too, so I would say a EG has a bit more sound deadening.

i did this without anything, i just chipped the shiz off. came off pretty easily.

good job, i like this:

its going to be loud and uncomfortable but thats the way i like it.

do u have a pic of it all back together man?

Steer^Gimic
12-12-2005, 04:23 PM
thanks for the input guys. regarding the legality, i have contacted numourous rwc inspectors and so far all saying the same thing.

and trav, look out for the finished product once the car is up and running.

your pretty lucky to just peel it all off mate!

12-12-2005, 11:06 PM
how do u do the dry ice method ?
also.. how much did the carpet weigh ?

Steer^Gimic
13-12-2005, 07:20 AM
dry ice is just a matter of pouring the it evenly all of the floor, letting it sit for 5mins or so then just chisel it all off.

i didnt weigh the carpet, couldnt imagine it would be more then 2kg

ekslut
13-12-2005, 07:30 AM
yeah, the dried ice you just do as Steer^Gimic said. Then it just literally pops off easy. No force needed :D

The carpet from my ED6 weighs 5kg total.

Steer^Gimic
13-12-2005, 06:38 PM
really? sweet. so in total, 10-12kg's shed.

i'm not saying you should do this but i had to at work, i had to replace the sound deadening in a camry due to a petrol leak from a jerry can, when the sound deadening absorded the petrol i could wipe it off!

WARNING! may get a bit hi using this method
only recomended for petrol sniffers!

just wanted to know.
if you removed the sound deadining under the carpet in an EK.
will you still be able to put the carpet and floor mats back on normally?

i'm planning to do this aswell and wouldn't mind the weight loss of 4-6kgs of sound deadening.
The carpet and floor mats will minimise the sound enough for street use IMO.

then when it comes time to 1/4 mile, i can strip carpet and mats then put them back on when im back on the street
