View Full Version : Civic - Rev idling fluctuates

Hi all, for the past 2 months...

When I cold-start the car, the revs go to 3000rpm, then instantly plunges down to 1500rpm, then quickly back up to 3000rpm. Its almost as if there is a blockage in the exhaust - but I dont think thats the cause though.

When the car is totally warmed up, most of the time it will idle at 1000rpm (normal), but occasionally it will sit at 1500rpm for no apparent reason.

Last week, the engine stopped on me, and recently had a new Distributer Coil, new spark plugs, and new spark plug wires. Its up and running again now (the car has much more power now btw), and the mechanic noticed the idle problem.

The mechanic said it could be the oil temperature sensor or something - I think he mentioned the throttle body, but not 100% sure. I didnt get them to to a proper diagnostic since I needed my car asap, plus he said it would be expensive to fix.

I read somewhere else that carbon deposits can build up in the throttle body - could this be causing the problem? How do I clean it out?

Any ideas?

Car details:

Honda Civic 93' Si 4door Sedan Manual.
Engine: ZC D16A8, 1.6L DOHC 16Valve 137hp (Same non-VTEC engine in some older CRX's)
KM: ~250,000
Oil used: Mobil Synth S 10W-40

Engine work since new: Only timing belt, water pump, tapet adjustments, and upper seal due to oil leak. Its now leaking from the CAM seal though, but very slowly. Performance is still excellent and still loves to rev 6000+ no probs.

hey search is your friend! there are a few threads already on bad idle/fluctuating idle - it may be a vacuum hose related problem, or maybe your idle air control valve (IACV - search for a DIY on ozhonda) needs a clean?

I did a quick search already but didnt find the exact problem my car had.

I will try and clean out the IACV using this guide: http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4693,
thanks :)

Cheers... Its hard to diagnose the exact problem, cos everyone has different ways of describing different symptoms.... So good luck! :D

So true - finding the problem is the hard bit, the easy bit is fixing it.

its not the IACV this time, its the FITV - fast idle thermo valve. search honda-tech or www.turbod16.com for the fix. Bascially there is a collant line going to a thingy under the throttle body. U gotta pull that thing off (3 bolts) then remove the bronze/gold colored backing plate (2 phillips head). U will then find a plunger which u need to screw all the way back in, and seat it so you cant turn it anymore. This will fix your problem 100% :) Its very common for odb1 civics. Take your radiator cap off first to releave the pressure in the cooling system, and then give the system a quick bleed when all is said and done.

I checked those sites for more info but they are a bit vague. I am following this guide http://www.emotors.ca/Articles/97.aspx but not sure if that part is the same as whats in my engine.

In the pic below (which is from my Civic), the cooling tube in the center (and a bit left) is going into that metal part, I think there are three bolts holding that in. Is that what I need to get to?
As u can see, the distributor is at the top-right (the left of the engine), so that should indicate where I pointed the camera.

So when I remove the bolts, I should be able to get to something like this, right?

...sry im a bit of a n00b when it comes to the actual engine, throttle body, etc..

i had the same problem, but it wasnt any of these, it was my TPS sensor, throttle postion sensor. are you getting the engine light coming on, if it does look on the ecu (under the kick panel on passenger side). it will flash you a code, look up what the code means..

TPS is the first suspect as well as the EACV. I replaced the throttle body on my B16A with one that hadn't had a tampered TPS and it's idle was spot on again :)

i no on my ek1 wen air con is on, nearly stall itself after rev, drop to like 100rpm =/

No I dont get any engine codes.

When I brake, the revs stay the same, and when I turn on AC the revs drop a tiny bit (maybe 200rpm) but thats normal. The ECU bumps it back up to normal revs a second later.

How much is a Throttle body from Honda? (my wallet suddenly feels much lighter). I will try the FITV first, but I need help locating it in mypic on the last page <<<

mrwillz, a while ago my revs were dropping to near 500rpm with AC almost stalling, but new spark plugs fixed that.
