Hi, I've just got a 96 Honda civic vti Jap import, but the engine seems the same as an ordinary civic's.

I've done some research on the Internet and someone said this is the only VTEC engine Honda has without the "VTEC" sign on it.

Anyone knows if this is true?

If this is true when does VTEC kicks in on this type of car?

If its a sedan, its just a standard non-vtec motor. If its the coupe, I believe its the SOHC vtec motor.

wtf guys?

ek sedans can have vtec. also for our market, pre-facelift coupes were from japan, while the facelift were from america.

badtodd - best to check your engine number, either on your rego papers or better yet, the engine block. ie. d16y1, d16y8 etc

Incorrect.

All coupe's come from america. EJ8(Pre-facelift), EM1(Facelift).

If it's a Vti It will have Vtec. But SOHC VTEC isn't that noticable. One way to be sure is to look for your VTEC solenoid. Its a golden/bronze colour cylindrical object about 3.5 cm high and a diameter of about 2 cm. If looking at your car from the front. It should be loacated at the top left corner of your rocker cover(the thing at the top of the engine that says "Honda") It will have one yellow and green wire coming out of it.

EK sedans have VTi's (SOHC VTEC)
EK hatch dont have VTi's (only DOHC VTEC)
all coupes are from america (GLi,VTi,VTIR)

so in your case

yes it does have vtec but it'll be a SOHC

And that VTEC is more tuned for fuel economy, rather than VTEC for power.

ffs SOHC vtec is NOT for fuel economy. this is the biggest myth on ozhonda. learn what vtec actually does in all its configurations, and u will understand.

ANYWAYS back to the point, this is answered in our civic FAQ. VTi Sedans come with both NON-VTEC motors and SOHC VTEC motors. It was an option :)

good stuff Weq. AFAIK the only engine "tuned for economy" is the SOHC VEi...came in the EG sedan ( and EK ?)

in eg series yes if u have vtec printed on the cam cover its jdm aus spec did not have this and about the vtec fuel economy if it says vtec-e that model was model for fuel economy i think they were only in early model civics

I've check the engine and it does have two solenoids on it, does this mean that the engine is a VTEC engine? I don't find d16y1, d16y8 etc where do you guys find that?

you have a 3 stage VTEC.

as for finding where your engine number is, look down to the front of your engine, basically where the gearbox/bellhousing meats the block, approx 20cm south-west of where your exhaust manifold is.

Well with your paticular motor, there are 2 "vtec" points so to speak. 3 stage VTEC, mixes the performence of SOHC VTEC with the Fuel Economy of VTEC-E. Basically you start off running on 3 valves per cylinder (1 Intake, 2 Exhaust) for fuel economy. Then First Solenoid fires off at around 3000Rpm which enables the 2 intake valves(VTEC E). At around 5500Rpm the lumpier Intake lobe is actived(SOHC VTEC) which gives you your top end power.

As for finding out when your vtec(s) :p are actived you can set up some lights. Basically tap into the wire running into each solenoid(this will be your +tve wire for your 12v LED) and run the negaive to anywhere on the metal frame of the car.

When VTEC kicks in the signal being sent to activate your VTEC solenoid, will light your LED as well. Search Google "VTEC light"

Hope this helps.

Can you post a pic of the 2 solenoids?

I am guessing by '2 solenoids', there is some confusion with the VTEC oil pressure switch...

how many wires come out of the solenoids badtodd... it should be a single green with a yellow stripe wire.

http://asia.vtec.net/article/d15b/

This site will show you what the VTEC solenoids look like. They are under the tube that connects the rocker cover to the intake pipe.
