View Full Version : I kinda need some advice boys and girls

I'm planning my new build for my civic, and kinda need some advice on which road i should go down. I'm not asking for people to decide for me, but more of guide as to what each combo would be like. My car will be a daily driver, and maybe once in a blue moon see the track/ strip. I currently have a b16a in my EG, and i am feeling the lack of torque, and its getting annoying.
I've considered a few options, and all seem tempting. My goal is to have a nice quick street car, and still tossing up between turbo or NA.
here is what i've considered:
keeping the b16 and building it.
refresh b16 + turbo
build b18c
b20vtec
All of the above were considered for drivability reasons. The other thing i'm seriously considering is building a b16 with forged internals etc with high boost which judging by bang for buck posts in the forced induction forum should produce 250+kw, HOW EVER..... i'm not sure i want that much power driving to work and around town, even though it seems VERY appealing. A combo like this would require a clutch with a very harsh take up wouldn't it?
I've ruled out k20 and h22 i think..
I hope you guys can offer me some suggestions, and maybe some stuff i hadn't thought of yet.
Thanks in advance guys
Lloyd
if you want torque go turbo. If your worried about too much power for a daily driver , when daily driving dont run high boost.

just go turbo, but make sure you get internals and proper job.. with headwork a decent job will cost you $18-20grand you should get around 300kw atw at my guess.
Is say if the B16a has low Kms. Deff keep that as the building block.
Turbo is an option but I think a supercharger is exactly what suits your needs. Doesn't make as much power as a turbo setup, But gives you more torque from the second you put your foot down.

I think that would be cool.

even turbo with stock internals will be plenty i think dude. That way you will still probably have a good 150+ kw atw and it will be probably heaps cheaper than building a NA motor with less power. Even though i love the sound of a NA, in terms of value the FI route is pretty hard to avoid.
so after all the bs talk, i think you should get a bolt on kit and a decent ecu then im sure you will be pretty happy with the torque then..

i never considered a supercharger.... interesting
so if i was to build a b20 with a s/c it would be a torque monster huh? :D

to many peeps doing engine conversions.. go TURBO for sure!!

it all depends on your budget and what power gains do you expect and want???
dont bother with b20 imo. weak sleeves.
keep the b16 and go wild :) much better bang for buck. ~300kw easy on a built engine with nice turbo and good tuner (dave)

thats my whole problem, i get the feeling 300kw as a daily would be a bit much. Not that i've ever driven a 300kw FF.... does james (BLKCRX) drive his car in peak hour? :D
edit: If i built a b20, i'd prob resleeve and keep in NA. From research, 86mm sleeves are idea for NA, and i read, from a reputable source, that 300 whp is attainable
work out your budget and how much power you want to achieve first bro, this way its easier for you to make your decision... :) btw keep the b16..myb go for cams/cam shaft/valves etc upgrade??

if i were you id go b20vtec. But i would have it done very carefully and properly and i wouldnt cut corners anywhere.
Thats just my personal opionion from the options u listed. And i prefer N/A over FI. If i wasnt big on N/A, then i guess id be with the others on the turbo option.

i've been in a car with cams/head work/ ecu and it went hard, but u gotta rev the b16 to bugery to get it going, i'm after more low end power which would make for a more fun street car IMO.

thats why b20vtec is the better option unless u wanna turbo. IMO they are the two options with the most amount of torque.

bro, i guess you can go for b18c wif turbo or rebuild..? just like the spoon b18c eg in hot version 60.. they go hard and came 2nd best out of other cars in 280hp...
unless if u got lots money then go for b20 :p but becareful on modding it

he would be better off just turboing his current b16a rather than swapping in a b18c and then turboing that.. that would be too expensive IMO.

yep too expensive.. (only if u got extra cash :P)
but just turbo b16 is cheaper lol... not sure about wut u did to ur engine..
but watchout for the compression rate..not too high coz honda engine dont do well in high compression rate..correct me if im wrong... ;)

If you take the Turbo path make sure you have enough cash to have the car ADR complied and engineered.
I believe its lot easier to leagly do a B18 B20 swap, yeah turbos are damn fast, and bang for buck thats why I went that path.
Downside to alot of turbo hondas is that it sucks driving around always checking your mirrors and stressing out about cops giving you a EPA notice.:(
