I was just checking out the specs for the Civic VTI Coupe in the permanent thread... Now correct me if i'm wrong but how in the HELL is it that the VTI coupe has the same KW output at the engine as a CXI non-VTec?
Has anyone here driven a stock one? Cos i'm planning to buy one tomorrow and i dont wanan get something gutless.
Would i be better off getting an EG VTI hatch? which would be better for responise and straight line?

I think i should point out to you that not all vtec motors are the same.

ok then i can handle that response...thanks man... :)
but can anyone tell me if the car goes reasonably well? i've drivena EG Si hatch and i was happy with that... response was great, with torque pretty much available when i want... would a VTI coupe be the same? or better?

mate COUPES r heavier cars than EG hatches by far
they r not crap they look good...and they r unique and stylish..
but a bit off in the engine...id say get it for a cheap price and put a b18c

It goes to show that "V-TECCKK" is not the be all and end all of performance in relation to Hondas. I suggest you do alot more reading up before you go out and purchase a car tomorrow. It's obvious you want something that goes quite well, yet do not have the knowledge to back up a worthwhile purchase.

It goes to show........dont' believe everything you read on the internet :)
I will update that sticky as it is a bit misleading. The VTi Civic coupe actually makes 96/98kW.

Thanks guys :D great help!!
I used to drive my cousin's Civic Si a bit...and i was happy iwth that kinda performance... would the VTi Coupe be better or even at least?
i really wanted a EG Si Hatch... but cant find a decent one around melbourne at all

OK I just re read the sticky and it seems correct.
But where are you getting that the cxi makes the same as the vti coupe??

31-03-2004, 10:35 PM
when i read the sticky i thought i saw Civic VTI 96-00 88kw, and Gli/Cxi 96-00 88kw
Probably shouldnt post this, but.... is a Teg GSi Better?

"better"? In what way? Exactly what are you looking for in a car? Danny suggested the extreme route of buying an EG and doing an engine conversion to a b18c. While this is highly tempting to some, it might not be for someone else. It'd really help if you laid out your goals, budget etc to us before anyone can give you more constructive or helpful comments mate.

righto... shoulda done that at the start yeh?
Well i have around 13-15000 bucks to waste... i dont want (well i actually do but not realistically now) a FWD wrex beater... i just want a car with a "fair" amount of grunt and good handling... I'll only be doing mild mods to it, like intake, exhaust, headers, maybe ECU... nothing like engine swap or turbo/supercharger...
So there ya go guys... sH*t i've wasted u gusy time... buy u all a round one day
Grab a EG VTi, bolt up a blower, and have ur fwd wrex beater for 15k :P
On topic: Not all VTi's had SOHC VTEC motors, some sedans came with the d16y7, same motor as the Gli/CXi. Just check under the good, the modle number should be d16y8 and its possible its got a large VTEC logo on it :P

ahhhhhhhh right...then y in the hell did they badge it VTI?
I think i'll go get a VTI hatch if i can... but if not i'll get the coupe and put a blower to that.... but low boost until i can afford internals

No VTi EK hatch and no Vtec logo on the coupe's engine.
I have a coupe, Its a nice ride good all rounder. Motor could do with a turbo... :)

Hmmm....isnt the Si better at modding? rather get an Si then.....but then thats if you can stand the older model shape.
for 15k you might be able to squeeze in a vtir hatch, i reckon thats much more worth it if your not going to mod engine or turbo the thing

I'd look for an EM1 (VTiR) Coupe or a EK4 (VTiR) Hatch for 15K. The hatch is doable in that price range - you might get lucky with a coupe. There's also the VTiR 'teg which should fit into that range. Just remember that a seller's price usually leaves room for negotiation. All 2 of these options are DOHC VTEC which means you aren't stuffing around in the performance stakes - the hard work is done a the factory for you.
"If" you went to the EG series, I'd suggest a Si over the VTi - same output but the Si seems to go harder being DOHC non-VTEC over the SOHC VTEC. Don't get taken in by the VTEC phenomena - its good, but only really in DOHC configuration. There are too many fanboys that will over-hype the qualities of VTEC.
BTW - if you add a turbo etc then your insurance skyrockets.
Persoanally - with that amount of money to spend then the VTiR series is the only thing I'd be looking at.

it should have the vtec logo on the valve cover, check the plate as well, should say d16y8 v0as9es0g9dksd0g random letters behind it lol...
if it is a d16y8 then it should be 98kw fly (factory claimed) and the cxi/gli is a d16y4 88kw fly (factory claimed) so about 10 kw difference.... but you get very tall engine cooling hahahhahaha

For $15k You could get an early DC2. Get like a '93 or possibly '94 VTi-R Integra! For that price they'd be in pretty good shape, it would beat the lot of them! :D

I think that's what I said skoota :P
Actually - for 15K there are a hell of a lot better cars than a Civic or 'teg. SR20DET in at least 3 that I can think of off the top of my head ;)
Then again, I'm still trying to find an old EH Holden or Datsun 240K as my next car... at a decent price - EHs run from 5K to 12K depending on condition. I just want one so I can drop an SR20DET into it and make the purists cry :D

Yeah you can certainly get a series 1 S14 silvia (aka 200sx) for around 15 in Melbourne.. Sometimes under.. They go hard too :)
Depends what you want, and how you want to be able to boast to your mates. Personally, I could do the turbo route but want to be able to say i've beaten someone in a N/A
Whatever floats ya boat d00d :D

To be honest, the Civic Coupe VTi in my opinion is a poor performer. I wouldn't buy a Coupe VTi if you want a car that goes hard. I'd buy it for its nice shape, fuel effeciency, reliability, comfort, and the fact that its nice to go for a drive in and that you don't see many coupe's around. Which is why I bought one. Its quite roomy for a coupe and fits 4 adults comfortably.
If you say you were happy with the Civic Si's power, I can't see why it would be much more different than the Coupe VTi. Although, I have to say the amount of 'grunt' in this car gets boring very easily and I end up just driving it like an old granny. But then again, thats just me.

Sorry Setanta - I didn't realise this thread went to a second page. Anywho, I would go with the Tegg VTi-R, I don't think he/she has enough money for a EM1 personally...
With a few simple intake, exhaust and handling mods.... you should have a package to beat cxi/gli/eg si/vti's in a vti coupe.... they are not THAT heavy.
i have owned mine for 2 yrs and have had 0 problems with it- great cars.

Unless the other cars are equally modified.
Beating a lower spec Civic is a no-brainer.
An EG Si with the same mods will still be a quicker car.
Neither will be a B16A powered car.

How much did ya pay?
Whilst we're on the topic, just wondering if there's any difference with the interior and exterior of the VTI Coupes over the VTI-R Coupes? Things like the front bar, rear bar, power options, brakes etc...

badsector...this thread is OL' SCHOOL.... hehe.. so Ghost, happy with your decision after these months?...VTi-R series is the way to go.. was wondering, is the Civic VTi Coupe roomier than the Civic VTi-R Coupe?...

Bad sector: the vtir coupe and vti coupe have slightly different body mods, the vtir has the updated front (slightly different headlights etc...), different front bar, when i bought my vtir it had the OEM foggies and rear lip (which the vti's dont get)
J-mun: the both coupes have the same interior space, basically the same body
