View Full Version : Grey smoke smell when engine is cold

Hi guys,

My car has done 250,000km and when I start the car cold, I smell that "Old Ford Laser" smell - if you know what I mean.

I see a little bit of white/greyish smoke, but not much at all really, the smell isnt too bad but its a similar smell you get from an old car. The engine seems quite loud as well when warming up.

The thing is - when the car has warmed up - the smoke and smell is *completely* gone! Plus the engine sounds much quieter, even if I rev it to 3000rpm to match the warm-up rev speed.

Are my valve seals or something worn?
Am I using the wrong oil (Mobil Synth S)?
Should I use natural oil instead?

The engine also has a clogged throttle body or idle sensor problem which I am yet to clean/fix (when I start the car it revs to 3000 then 1500 then 3000 all within a second) ... would this be causing it?

yes your valve stem seals are worn

the oil your using is ok

your EACV could need cleaning as well as your throttle body.

Could I get a mech to replace the seals on the spot within a day?
Or would that require an engine rebuild (engine removal etc..)?

cheers.

that wouldnt be an unreasonable request

all depends on the mechanic. dont let them tell you they have to rip the head off

ok thanks for the help. Hopefully my mobile mechanic can do it.

If you know of a guide regarding seal replacement (so I can get the jist of the work involved), that would be great. thx.

search this forum, there are methods explained on how to remove the valve springs with out loosing the valve down the bore, involves using rope

i have the same problem, also when vtec comes on or i rev to 8k, ppl say that smoke comes out the exhaust, my mate says that its my piston rings, but the car is still putting out the power. 80kw@tw in a b16a2 about 114kw @ the flywheel. it has about 187xxx on the clock. what would be the best thing for me to do???

my B16a2 puts out 95KW ATW stock. you car is a bit underpower.

then again different dyno's different results

if its not using to much oil and your happy with its performance, keep driving it

you probably looking at an engine rebuild, or at least ring replacement.

how much will it cost for an engine rebuild to make it ready for a turbo if i go down the forced induction path, and who can do it

Even after a rebuild, wouldnt turboing an old engine be risky? (in terms of reliability).
