I've had my Euro for 4 months and it has developed a rattle around the glovebox area. It's intermittent but getting more frequent and obvious. I've tried to identify the source and it seems to be coming from the glovebox or side airvent. It sounds like something is loose. Only rattles when going on coarse roads. Anyone with similar experience?

I've had the same rattle for quite some time, but it seems to be speed dependant, only becoming intrusively obvious above 80km/h. I've yet to have anything done about it.

I had it. Sounds like something vibrating at a particular frequency. For me, it happened at 1500-2000rpm and also on rough roads. Sounded like flapping paper.

To determine if you have the same rattle as I did, just put your hand on the right edge of the glovebox when the rattle occurs. If it stops even with light pressure, then it is the same problem as mine.

I"ll post a pic tomorrow if I get a chance to run out to my car. Otherwise, here is what I did:

I looked behind my glovebox and prodded around, taping things up one by one to find the cause. For me, it was the padding material behind the glovebox being flattened, so it did not prevent vibrations as well as it did when new. Just above the right pollen filter tray release clip, there is wiring that is wrapped in brown plastic with a piece of long paper on it, like a tag. The wiring presses against the padding material when the glovebox is closed. I taped around that paper tag so that it did not touch the plastic surrounding and instead was pressed against the wiring. Stopped about 70% of the glovebox rattles.

Spot on aaronng,

I had the same problem and had the dealership looke into it 3 times without fixing it. I decided to speak to the tech and removed the glovebox with him and finally found the source of the problem. The sound seems to come from the wiring vibrating against the mould of the glovebox and hence the annoying rattle. Best suggestion is to take the car back to the dealer and let him know that this is a "common" problem. It should be easily fixed.
BTW - The glovebox lid can be easily removed if youre prepared to DIY

OMG aaronng! you seem to have all the problems I had ;/

Anyway My glovebox can't closed properly. Its got a slight gap on the right hand side (at night the light enters the cabin!) and it rattles as well. I put my hand on the right hand ledge when it rattles, ta ta, it stops it...
I'll get them to look at it again when i got to get the fignernail sound fix up.

btw, telling them a common problem won't help... they couldn't find the fignernail sound even tho I told them about the thread from this forum!!! :(

Mine has the gap as well. But it's not that bad til I can see the glovebox light. With the dealers, it's better to let them know the problem and let them find it themselves. Otherwise they are always reluctant to fix things if you tell them the solution to it.

When you bring your car to show them the problem, always go with them on the test drive. So that you can point out the sounds.

Otherwise, you have to fix it yourself. All you need is some masking tape and double-sided foam mounting tape. For the rear tapping, you need to spray in some lube into a parcel shelf weld spot.

You guys have the least problems of all :)...

My whole car rattles... From the A pillar to the boot, you name it, I got it LOL! Dealer kept saying it's normal but I think otherwise now reading that some owners here have rattles all over their Euros!

I don't have the Glovebox rattle but instead if I open up the inside of the sunroof - it seems to have a slighty rattle. Pretty annoying.

And putting the sunnies in the above box can sometimes get a rattle.

And the passenger seat belt when not placed properly, get some rattle too.

My friend's E46 330Ci has worst rattles though, so don't complain too much! 135K when he fully optioned up.

Bumping up a thread from the past. I've finally fixed my glovebox rattle with a well placed piece of sticky foam. I found the fix from over at tsx.acurazine.com, through a member (Spoon) who painstakingly took off his glovebox many times just to pinpoint the cause of the rattle. For those with the rattle, look here: http://tsx.acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?p=659964

The pics of the glovebox frame is a little different from ours in the Euro, but the area to apply the sticky foam is on the right side of the glovebox frame, above the screw where the metal frame meets the plastic. I'll take a pic of the area later.

I think the small level(plastic guide thingy) at the left side of the glove box is the culprit

In some cases, yes, but not in mine. This is my 2nd glovebox, with a new damper arm. In fact, I've already applyed foam and some thick lube to the pivot points of the damper to reduce vibrations and it didn't work.

This foam thingy in between the metal and plastic worked for me. On day 2 now.

What sort of foam or felt tape you guys use to tape or stick it? Where to get it? Repco? Bunnings?

The best are the thick and narrow type foam tape, like the ones sold for weather sealing. The one I have is 7mm thick and 10mm wide, black in colour and a nice and dense, squishy foam. I got it from Supercheap (comes in a huge spiral roll in a plastic bag)
