View Full Version : [Euro] Another exhaust question

I seem to recall somebody mentioning this once, but I can't find the thread...
Looking at the standard exhaust, it appears as if the two rear mufflers are more or less straight through, which makes me assume that the centre muffler between the them and the resonator is a baffled unit probably responsible for most of the sound supression.
First, can anybody who's changed their exhaust or who has a comprehensive manual confirm this, and second, if it is a baffled muffler, has anyone replaced it with a straight through unit?
I was just thinking about the fact that a lot of cat-back systems don't offer great power gains (torque figures aside) and since I'd possibly like a bit more noise (but not a lot), possibly a really cheap mod is to just replace that muffler...
Why pay for a whole new stainless system, when you might get away with just replacing a muffler?
Anybody tried this or have any thoughts?

I haven't tried this but here are my thoughts. A major portion of sound suppression is carried out by the resonator and the first muffler. The muffler tips themselves are just for sound tuning.
The reason I say this is because the distance from the first muffler to each of the muffler tips are different and that the diameter of the piping to the muffler tip is quite small as well. So gaining power from just changing muffler tips would be difficult as the muffler tips are not likely to be the component that is restricting the flow of exhaust gases.
And I've also seen on the US forums that changing the muffler tips gives a smaller power increase than using a high-flow cat.

Modding the stock exhaust is a bit painful thats if u wanted to have the option of going back to stock setup...I originally wanted to just change stock mufflers over for an aftermarket pair until i discovered the driver side muffler wielded on to exhaust system unlike passenger side which bolted which basically make going cat back a easy and more costly option... unless someone can please tell me otherwise!??!

At some point I might have to visit an exhaust shop and see what they reckon. It might be better to go for a whole cat-back, but I'm willing to bet that changing just that centre muffler is likely to do something good -- at least in letting a subtle noise through and if the original is baffled, it must increase gas flow. The two rear mufflers don't look to be much of an issue...
After all, recent posts note a surprise at how small the mugen piping is...

There is another design exhaust that will be locally designed and slated for release roughly mid year. I can't give to much away only to say that my car is being used as the test car (it is not complete yet). This will be an exhaust that is not cat back it goes beyond that....From the manifold back including super high flow cat...from my test driving ther other day it ...alll I can say ....wow. More testing is required as it is not complete....but I would strongly suggest you wait for this to be released. All restriction has been removed from the manifold back to the Cat. Trust me there is alot of this from the manifold to the rear of the Cat on the standard system.

That sounds good. How much does something like that cost? Usually, locally developed systems do cost more than those from overseas.

I don't know yet. But it will be comparible to over seas units. Remember with units like Greddy and Fujitsubu they only go to the cat not to the manifold as this one does so you have to take this into consideration. But again as I state will be at least Mid Year till it is ready. And it will be Dyno proven as well not made just to look good.
from my test driving ther other day it ...alll I can say ....wow.
Hmmm - I like the sound of that - especially coming from Peekay who last had a heavily modified Rolla Sportivo. Sounds like there are huge gains in the cat.
