Hi all,

I just got my hands on a 1998 Prelude VTIR 5 Speed manual :)
Was driving it down the M5 motorway and realised that while cruising at 110/hour the tacho was sitting at 3500 rpm, and at 120km/hour the needle sits at 4000 rpm, all in 5th gear. Does this sound right?

Is looks a tad high for me considering it is a 2.2L engine.
My old EG 1.6L Civic Auto sits at around 3300rpm at 110km/hour, and it has a smaller engine, less torque, and only 4 speeds.

Can you guys post your RPM at 110km for your Gen5 Vtir 5 speeds.

Thanks

Thanks Wynode.
An interesting articular, but that only shows max speed on each gear.

That sounds right to me. Mine sits on 3500 at 110 km/h...

Yeah, that's normal. Our cars tend to have pretty short gearing, (to help keep rpm in vtec range)

Was hoping it would sit at a lower rev range so that exhaust wont drone too much.
Thanks all

i drive a 99 ATTS and it sits at just over 3000rpm at 110

just on a side note, when i drove a BA falcon auto, 110 it was doing about 1500rpm! couldn't belive how low the rev's were, MAD long distance cruiser

Lol, like a truck!

RE: ATTS, looks like the 5th Gens have pretty tall gearing compared to the 4th gen VTiR. At 110, I am pulling about 3500rpm :( The bright side is that its dead easy to keep it on the big cam in everygear due to the shorter ratios.

My car sits at a tad below 3500RPM at 110kph. I'm a little disappointed how high this is too, I'd have prefered either a taller 5th gear or a 6th gear to allow for better highway economy and to cut down on drone.

5th Gen Prelude really needs a 6th gear, ratios are pretty good - but need that extra gear for cruising as AMPERAGE said...

but yeah ~3000RPM for ~100km/hr and ~3500RPM for 110km/hr =)

That is right.
I would have thought in 5th at 110km it would sit around 3000rpm or even less coming from a 1.6L auto civic that did 110 at 3300rpm.
Another reason for me now to remove the mugen.

Your auto civic has taller gearing (being 4 speed, i think), and also overdrive (i think) - hence why the revs were slightly lower at same speed??? (someone want to correct me if im wrong)

Maybe keep all the other pipes but get a new muffler put on - twin tip or something a little quieter. That exhaust gets rid of one of the main problems/power loss for prelude - non-mandrel bend exhaust... so you should keep it on there if you want to mod your car in the future.

If you sell that exhaust, you could get a fair bit for it tho.

Still waiting on the stock exhaust from McChook.
But i will certainly be putting the stock exhaust back on once i get it from McChook.
On top of the noise, i just cant justify paying an additional $500 in annual insurance premiums just to have a louder exhaust.

store it somewhere for a few months, i'll buy half your car (i.e. lsd, exhaust) when i have money again :D

3500rpm in 5th gear at 120kph, not a lot considering redline is at 7200rpm.

my eg civic, does 2500rpm at 100, its got vtec-e so i think the transmission is made for more economical highway cruising?
