View Full Version : Air vents, fan noisy, leak in passenger side

Problem 1)
When I turn on the A/C on a warm/hot day, I notice a damp almost musty smell coming out of the vents.
Rather than just get a cheap air freshener and stick it on the dash, I would rather get to the source of the problem.
Apparently bacteria or fungi can grow in the air vent piping over time, is there a special spray or cleaner that deodorizes the piping properly, killing of whatever is growing in there? Does my civic have an Air Conditioner filter? (93 Civic Si)

Problem 2)
The vent fan(s) is noisy most of the time - it makes a high pitch trickle sound. Obviously the bearing have worn - is it a big job of replacing the fan(s)? What would need to be removed to get to it?

Problem 3)
On a heavily rainy day, water creaps into the passenger area near the firewall somewhere. Are there any common issues regarding water leaks in the 92-95 Civic range? What areas should I check for leakage? That plastic shield that runs along the bottom of the Windshield is not sealed anymore (there is a 6mm gap), could that be the cause? But the shield has holes in it anyway (where leaves catch), so surely that can be the problem, right?

thx.

1. Yes mouldy air builds up over time ~ according to the manual you should always have the air on and circulating o prevent such "buildup". Try driving aroudn for awhile with the vernts open and blowing constant ~ after a week or so it might dry out ote mouldy smell . Otherwise there is anti-bacterial spray you can get from Supercheap auto or similar.

well , problem 2 is not hard ~

I had a similar problem recently ~ ECU MAN showed the way.
there is 3 x 8mm hex bolts holding the fan into under the glovebox - disconnect the fan loom + take out these 3 bolts and the fan should jsut slide out.
Inside the fan ( looks like a washing machine basket) there should be a bunch of dead leaves and stones etc ( making this noise you speak of ) OR spin it to fidn the bearig is truly stuffed. Empty or Replace as needed and reinstall.

wynns have a product called "airco" that you "let off" in your car

its a deodoriser and anti bacterial mist that you let off .. u must have car running and a/c on recirculate.

but definately dont get into your car when this thing is going off.

1) Thanks i'll look for that airco stuff. I do have the fans running 100% of the time anyway - usually on '2', but I guess that wont stop the bacteria completely.

2) Ive noticed a plastic box under the glovebox, i'll have a look tomorrow. I'm very certain its bad bearings since ive heard the same noise from my PC's bad fans. Hopefully a new fan wont cost an arm and a leg. I rather not get a 2nd hand one since that may be noisy as well.

Do you guys get leaks in the passenger area of your eg?
